Major: Biology Pre-Med

Maria Purcell has embraced every opportunity Walsh University offers to grow academically, spiritually, and as a leader. From the moment she arrived on campus, she felt welcomed and supported. “Right as I stepped on campus, I was welcomed with open arms by the Campus Ministry. By going to daily Mass, retreats, and adoration offered on campus, I have grown in my relationship with the Lord in ways I never thought possible, while meeting lifelong friends along the way,” she said.

Her involvement across campus has strengthened both her leadership and personal growth. “Being a part of Honors, Residence Life, and Campus Ministry has exposed me to incredible mentors and peers who support and challenge me to be the best version of myself,” Maria said. Faculty mentors, including Dr. Amy J. Heston and Dr. Adam Underwood, have guided her through research and academic challenges, providing opportunities she might not have found elsewhere.

Service has been another cornerstone of Maria’s Walsh experience. One of her most meaningful experiences has been participating in Walsh University’s student-led dance marathon, Cavathon, which benefits Akron Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. This past year, the 11th annual Cavathon raised over $34,000, with students enjoying live music, dancing, Zumba, games, and even a tug-of-war competition. Reflecting on the event, Maria said, “Being part of Cavathon and seeing the Miracle Kids share their stories made me realize the tangible difference we can make in children’s lives. It inspired me to continue serving and leading with purpose in everything I do.”

Through experiences like Cavathon, Maria has honed leadership, collaboration, and empathy, qualities she brings to every role on campus, from Honors Program junior representative to Pre-Healthcare Club President. Whether mentoring residential students, leading student organizations, or volunteering in the community, she has seized every chance to grow and give back.

Reflecting on her time at Walsh, Maria said, “I would describe Walsh as transformative. I have grown in all aspects of my life at Walsh. Due to the intimate campus community, I have been able to seize opportunities that I may not have been able to at a bigger college.”

Looking ahead, Maria plans to pursue a career in pediatrics, carrying forward the lessons of leadership, service, and community that Walsh has instilled in her.
