This program equips healthcare employees to put data analytics and AI to work on operational challenges such as patient access, scheduling and staffing. Participants work in Power BI Desktop, Excel and Power Query with generative AI tools, using synthetic, de-identified data only, and leave with a functioning risk dashboard and a validated AI assistant.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Prepare de-identified appointment, visit and provider data for analysis in Power Query, following HIPAA data-handling rules
- Develop a missed-appointment risk score with AI visuals and DAX, verify it against hand calculations and historical outcomes, and review it for bias
- Project patient demand and staffing needs and detect anomalies in operational data
- Create an operational dashboard that brings together risk scores, forecasts and outreach alerts
- Set up a custom AI assistant grounded in organizational documents and verify the accuracy of its responses
Training Outline
- Healthcare Data Preparation (2 hrs): De-identified appointment, visit and provider data in Power Query; building model inputs; HIPAA data-handling rules. Applied lab: Convert raw appointment records into an analysis-ready dataset with documented query steps.
- Predicting Missed Appointments (2 hrs): Finding predictive factors with AI visuals; a DAX-based risk score; validation against past outcomes; bias review. Applied lab: Develop a risk score and verify it against hand calculations.
- Forecasting and Operational Dashboards (2 hrs): Demand and staffing forecasts; anomaly detection; a dashboard that flags appointments for outreach. Applied lab: Create a dashboard that brings together risk scores, forecasts and alerts.
- Generative AI in Healthcare Operations (2 hrs): Structured prompts for operational summaries; a custom AI assistant built on organizational documents; accuracy testing. Final project: Present a risk dashboard and a validated AI assistant.
Assessment and Credentials
Every session includes an applied lab, and the program concludes with a final project. Participants who complete all four sessions and the final project receive a certificate of completion from Walsh University Skilled Technical Workforce (STWF) titled “Applied Data Analytics and AI in Healthcare.”
Skills That Transfer Beyond
The skills serve health systems and hospitals, clinics and physician practices, and behavioral health and long-term care providers alike, and they carry over to operations analytics in other industries. Its data preparation, data modeling and dashboard work mirror three skill areas of Microsoft's published PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst exam guide: Prepare the data, Model the data, and Visualize and analyze the data. Since the skills center on widely used analytics and AI tools and not on one employer's processes, participants keep them as they move between roles and employers.
Data and Privacy in Class
All labs use synthetic, de-identified sample data rather than any one employer's systems, and participants follow HIPAA data-handling rules throughout. No patient information is used in class.
