The Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents has determined that undergraduate students in Teacher Preparation programs can no longer earn a Reading Endorsement as part of their Four Year Resident Educator license. This took effect June 15, 2014. Walsh University received an extension from the Ohio Board of Regents to continue offering the Reading Endorsement to its undergraduate (and some graduate) students through December 15, 2014.
Undergraduate Candidates
The following requirements must be met for a Walsh undergraduate candidate to still apply for the Reading Endorsement:
- The six Reading Endorsement courses must be successfully completed by December 15, 2014.
- The candidate must graduate from Walsh University by December 15, 2014.
- The candidate must take and pass the two required Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) sub-tests no later than December 15, 2014 (test numbers 038 and 039).
Scores for OAE tests taken in December will not be available for approximately two months. If the two-sub tests are taken and passed by December 15, 2014, the undergraduate candidate meeting the above listed requirements may apply for the Reading Endorsement. If the two sub-tests are not passed, the only way the undergraduate candidate can earn a Reading Endorsement is by following the directions below for graduate candidates.
Graduate Candidates Prior to December 15, 2014
Walsh graduate students currently working on the Reading Endorsement who were granted credit for previously completed undergraduate coursework toward the 6 required courses must:
- Complete all required Reading Endorsement coursework by December 15, 2014
- Take and pass the two required OAE sub-tests no later than December 15, 2014
Scores for OAE tests taken in December will not be available for approximately two months. If the two-sub tests are taken and passed by December 15, 2014, the graduate candidate meeting the above listed requirements may apply for the Reading Endorsement.
If the two sub-tests are not passed, the graduate candidate should follow the directions below for Graduates Candidates Seeking the reading Endorsement after December 15, 2014.
Graduate Candidates Seeking the Reading Endorsement after December 15, 2014
- Must possess a current Ohio educator license
- The candidate must have previously completed nine (9) hours of undergraduate or graduate level reading coursework if he/she holds an Adolescent/Young Adult (AYA), multi-age (at Walsh this would include physical education and ISE Mild/Moderate or Moderate Intensive) or career technical license
OR
- The candidate must have previously completed twelve (12) hours of undergraduate or graduate reading coursework if he/she does not hold a license listed in point 1.
- The candidate must complete the Reading Endorsement Program as outlined by the Ohio Board of Regents that consists of six courses (18 hours). The candidate may apply 3 hours of prior under-graduate reading coursework upon approval of the Director of Education Graduate Studies. Those three hours cannot be applied toward a Master's degree
- The candidate must take and pass the two required Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) sub-tests (test numbers 038 and 039) before applying for the reading endorsement.
- The candidate can apply for the Reading Endorsement through Walsh University, Division of Education, the Office of Field Placements and Licensure.
