Curriculum Overview
The Walsh University Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum includes four (4) full-time professional clinical education experiences. While participating in clinical education, students are away from campus and are engaged in experiential learning under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist.
The Director of Clinical Education works with student physical therapists to establish an individualized pathway for clinical education placements based on the student’s interests and preferences. Common areas of practice are:
- Pediatrics
- Orthopedics
- Geriatrics
- Neurology
- Pelvic Health
- Sports
- Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
Clinical experiences may include traditional clinical practice, administration, specialty practice, teaching, and/or research in settings such as acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, outpatient/ambulatory centers, school-based, and home health.
Professional experiences take place in Years 2 and 3 of the program and result in a total of 38 weeks of clinical education. Professional experience courses are sequenced strategically in the academic curriculum, therefore students must satisfactorily complete all prerequisite academic course work prior to participating in clinical education. Students are responsible for costs associated with clinical education, including transportation, housing, and onboarding.
