Professor of History Dr. Kelly Mezurek served as keynote speaker at the Ohio National Guard’s Freedom to Serve celebration and was recognized for her passionate advocacy, as she received the honorary ‘Buckeye Colonel’ award from Ohio’s Adjutant General John Harris. On June 17, Professor of Biology, Dr. Jennifer Clevinger presented a research poster on “An Investigation of the Fecundity of Euonymus alatus, a Popular Landscape Shrub that has Escaped into Native Habitats throughout the Eastern USA” at the BOTANY 2024 conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is a joint national conference of the Botanical Society of America and The American Society of Plant Taxonomists. Other collaborating authors on the poster included Honors Biology Walsh Graduate Megan Soehnlen Genetin Class of 2021 and Dr. Curtis Clevinger of Stark State College.
Jennifer Vokoun, Associate Professor of Graphic Design and the Director of the Center for Sustainable Food Design, co-authored a chapter, “Design Thinking Workshop: Using Experiential Learning, Creativity, and Empathy to Learn the Complexities of Food Insecurity and Sustainability,” in Marta Antonelli and Pierangelo Isernia (eds.) 2024 book, Food Sustainability and the Media: Linking Awareness, Knowledge and Action.

The chapter discusses the use of experiential learning in the form of a design thinking workshop during a conference to encourage attendees to think critically about food systems and the challenges of food sustainability, in particular those related to food insecurity and how they can be addressed.
Dr. Britt Cooper, Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts, Professor of Choral Music, has received news that an original composition for children’s choir, entitled “Good News - A Hymn for Christian Education,” has been accepted for publication with Chorister's Guild, one of the largest publishing houses for choral music in the United States. Publication is slated for the Spring of 2025.

Dr. Britt Cooper, Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts, traveled to North Carolina to conduct the 16th annual High School Honor Choir at UNC-Pembroke. Students from a dozen high schools in eastern North Carolina participated in the choir along with college students from the university. He led six hours of rehearsals and a workshop for high school directors culminating in a performance.

Dr. Michele Tilstra (Occupational Therapy) and Dr. Tiffany Peets (Counseling and Human Development) collaborated on two articles published in peer-reviewed journals related to research related to students participating in the Counselors and Occupational Therapists Professionally Engaged in the Community (COPE) Program, which was funded through the Health Resources and Service Administration/ Behavioral Health Workforce Training Grant. Professor Jennifer Vokoun, Director of the Center for Sustainable Food Design and an Associate Professor of Graphic Design was a guest lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis for the Design in Social Systems class, on Wednesday, February 21. This course is an interdisciplinary group of students who explore the processes that artists and designers use to address, influence, and inspire change around systemic social issues. Professor Vokoun led students through an experiential lecture on sustainable food design and a workshop on mapping the campus food system.

Dr. Christine McCallum, Physical Therapy Program Chair and Professor and Drs. Mitch Wolden (University of Jamestown, North Dakota), Cindy Flom-Meland (University of North Dakota), Elsa Dreven and Lor Gusman (University of Miami, Florida) were recently selected to receive the 2023 PTLI (Physical Therapy Leadership Institute) Influencer Award for the Physical Therapy Education Leadership Conference platform presentation titled: Determining the Optimal Length of Clinical Education Experiences: Key Education Stakeholders Perspectives. The PTLI Influencer Award is given to a presentation that can positively influence excellence in PT education and is consistent with the vision and mission of PTLI.

Dr. Ute Lahaie, Associate Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness & Assessment, Walsh University & Dr. Amy Heston, Professor of Chemistry, Walsh University gave a presentation entitled Shining New Light in Assessment Through a New Center for Academic Excellence at the IUPUI 2023 Assessment Institute in Indianapolis, IN. The Assessment Institute in Indianapolis is the nation’s oldest and largest event focused on assessing and improving higher education.
Dr. Amy Heston gave an additional presentation at the 2023 Assessment Institute. The title of the presentation was: Students as Assessment Pioneers in STEM Education: Strategies for Successful Partnerships.

Three Walsh University faculty celebrated commencement at Youngstown State University on May 6, 2023. Dr. Alexia Lairson, Dr. Michele Tilstra and Dr. Matthew Mucha each were awarded a PhD in Health Sciences. For all three of these faculty, this is their second earned doctoral degree, having each earned clinical doctorates previously.
Dr. Alexia Lairson PT, DPT, PhD, GCS is an assistant professor and the Director of Clinical Education for the Walsh University Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Dr. Lairson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Youngstown State University in 2006 and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Walsh University in 2009. She is Board-Certified in Geriatric Physical Therapy. Dr. Lairson’s dissertation was titled “Exploration of Financial Management Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes for Entry-Level Physical Therapist Practice in the United States.”
Dr. Michele Tilstra, PhD, OTD, OTR/L, CHT is an assistant professor and the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for the Walsh University Master of Occupational Therapy program. Dr. Tilstra has a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Louisiana State University and a Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate with an Education Specialty from Rocky Mountain University. She is a Certified Hand Therapist. Dr. Tilstra’s dissertation was titled, “Cultural Competence with Humility using Interprofessional Multicultural Learning Activities.” Her primary research interests include mental/behavioral health interventions, professional behavior development, and trauma-informed fieldwork supervision and clinical care.
Dr. Matthew Mucha PT, DPT, GCS graduated from the Walsh University DPT program in 2017 and completed a geriatric residency at the Cleveland VA Medical Center in 2018, where he continues to serve as a physical therapist and residency instructor. Dr. Mucha teaches in the Walsh University Doctor of Physical Therapy program as adjunct faculty in the area of adult development and geriatrics. His primary area of research is the role of individual and professional values in physical therapy.
Walsh University’s Center for Restorative Justice and Community Health led by Michelle Bemiller, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology and Applied Criminal Justice, received a grant for the Restorative Connections through Peer Mentoring in Education program. Through the Center for Restorative Justice and Community Health, and with Dr. Bemiller’s supervision, Walsh students Olivia Carter-Nye, Natalie Woodlock, Jimmy Kast, and Riley Bemiller-Kelley will facilitate restorative justice processes with Our Lady of Peace Catholic School (OLOP) K-5 students throughout the month of June. At OLOP, restorative games facilitated through restorative circle processes will help students develop interpersonal skills, empathy, connect with peers and team building. This project was funded in partnership with the Stark County Mental Health & Addiction Recovery and funded through the StarkMHAR Charitable Fund at Stark Community Foundation. The Center for Restorative Justice and Community Health at Walsh University launched in fall of 2022 with a fundamental goal of encouraging cultural humility and providing education and resources that help build and maintain healthy relationships both on and off campus.
Dr. Pamela D. Ritzline, PT, MS, EdD, Dean of the School of Behavioral & Health Sciences and Professor of Physical Therapy recently was chosen by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) as a recipient of the Mary Jane Harris Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Ritzline was selected for "having demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the CAPTE accreditation process and to the quality of physical therapy education." Dr. Ritzline was honored at the Spring 2023 CAPTE meeting on April 25, in Alexandria, VA.

Dr. Nina Rytwinski, Dr. Jennifer Clevinger and Dr. Amy Heston traveled with Honors students Myla Demko, Franny Sberna, and Rebecca Tsai to Indianapolis for the Mid-Eastern Honors Association’s Annual Conference. The students presented their Senior Honors Theses. Fanny and Myla presented posters, Rebecca presented a book that she wrote, and Dr. Clevinger and Dr. Rytwinski led a faculty panel discussion.
Father Shawn Conoboy, Ph.D., an adjunct professor at Walsh and a member of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, has been given the assignment of a lifetime. The Most Reverend David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown, has released Rev. Conoboy for an assignment at the Vatican where he will work for the section of the Dicastery which interacts with local parishes worldwide to help identify their significant needs and support action plans to resolve various issues. His temporary assignment begins June 1.
Walsh University was recently commended for its work with first year and transfer students during a 4-week Academy on the First College Year with The John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education. The intensive online program is designed to engage private and public institutional teams of 3-8 in a collaborative exploration of the foundational aspects of student success in the first year of college. With evidence based and data driven learning, the Walsh team including Dr. Edna McCulloh, Associate Vice President for Academic Administration, Tiffany Kinnard, Dean of Students, and Vanessa Freiman, Director of First-year Student Success and Academic Advising, presented on Walsh’s current programs, conducted an audit and developed a plan to use the Gardner Institutes resources and tools to strengthen its first-year student programs and improve outcomes for all first-year students.
Each year, Megan Pellegrino, Director of Museum Studies and Director of the Hoover Historical Center, presents Hoover Company history to third grade students in North Canton. For the second year, the third-grade classes from St. Paul’s Catholic School visited the IBEW Local 1985 Labor Museum where they participated in activities reinforcing the concepts that they learned in the presentations. The activities were spearheaded by Walsh students in the Honors Program, including Junior Jack Shanor, who worked with Pellegrino to coordinate this effort. Walsh University is proud to announce that the Ohio Association of Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) named Chenoa Frazier, Assistant Director of Financial Aid, as the very first recipient of the Outstanding New Professional Award. This award was created to recognize the outstanding contributions of financial aid professionals early in their careers, including contributions to the institution/workplace, community, and/or OASFAA with potential for continued success in the profession.
Many thanks for the great collaborative efforts made by Cav Nation to pull together Walsh’s inaugural Cavs Connect Annual Conference, which took place Thursday, March 2, in the Barrette Business and Community Center. The University welcomed more than 90 guests, including faculty, staff, alumni, coaches, students and community members. From a powerful keynote on Leading with Cultural Humility by Dr. James Knight to our guest speakers, including Walsh alum Jenifer Hill ’10, Dr. Britt Cooper, and Nick Browning, there was something for everyone! Walsh University recently won first place in the 2023 Chartered Financial Analyst Institute Research Challenge hosted by the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society of Cleveland. The team representing Walsh’s DeVille School of Business beat out five finalists including Kent State, Bowling Green, John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace, and is now preparing to compete in the regional competition in April in Chicago. Each year, teams of three to five undergraduate and graduate students commit upwards of 200 hours to preparing and competing in a comprehensive and applied case study competition. Team members representing finance and accounting majors include Jessie Varnis, Cameron Gregory, Megan Maxim, Oskar Johannessen and Lucas Jorstad as well as academic advisor Dr. James Falter and industry advisor Nicholas Perini.

Dr. Dan Passerini, Executive Director of Cross-Enterprise Operations, contributed to an article in Monday’s Crain’s Cleveland Business about Walsh University’s investment in technology and training that make the University stand out in the STEM and workforce development spaces. The Skilled Technical Workforce program and the Center for Scientific Excellence Laboratory, recognized by the National Science Board in November at the annual Science and Technology Summit at Walsh University, gives undergraduates hands-on research opportunities and helps local companies solve problems and upskill employees.
Dr. Mike Petrochuck, Interim Dean of the DeVille School of Business and Professor of Marketing and Healthcare Management, recently contributed to a story in the Canton Repository on the USFL coming to Canton, offering his expertise on how this will give our local community an economic bump.

Congratulations Dr. Amy Heston! Quality Matters accepted two of her videos for placement on the QM YouTube channel. One regarding the QM review process and another about earning QM's Teaching Online Certificate. The channel is designed to help other faculty and instructional designers all over the US and beyond to international higher ed and K12 QM subscribers, etc.

An Empirical-Based Working Paper" at the Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA) Conference held at Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN, in October 2021.
The multi-year process of publishing these pieces involved collaborations with students at Lake Middle School and Strongsville High School. I directed students during rehearsals, focusing on techniques and musical elements of each composition. Following this, they premiered the works and recorded videos that are available for viewing on the publisher's website.

The course was titled, “The Importance of Occupational Therapy in Populations who Have Experienced Homelessness, Sex Trafficking, and Mental Illness: Student Perspectives after Inaugural Program Implementation in the Community.”

In April, Dr. Whetstine presented her work focusing on Ethics in the Pandemic at the 18th Annual Critical Care Symposium in Manchester England. This international symposium boasts a multidisciplinary faculty representing five continents and draws over 400 attendees.
In September, Dr. Whetstine and her colleagues presented on The Relationship between Medical Mistrust, Vaccine Hesitancy, and Social Media at the 12th Annual Western Michigan University Medical Humanities Conference.
Dr. Whetstine is quoted in the October issue of Medical Ethics Advisor regarding the unique ethical issues that arise with patients who do not have surrogates for medical decision making
Dr. Whetstine was invited by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, one of the National Institutes of Health, to serve on a Data Safety and Monitoring Board. Such boards monitor the safety of subjects and quality of clinical studies.

joined 14 other renowned athletics representatives to develop an enhanced understanding of the roles and critical functions of a Division II FAR at the campus, conference and national levels. Selected in spring 2022, these participants all previously participated in one of the FAR Fellows Institutes and demonstrated examples of how they had used information and skills from that event to enhance their work with student-athletes and within intercollegiate athletics.

Thomas Roblee, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands, recently published two new music compositions for percussion ensemble through PerMus publications. The works, titled Sunrise Relay and Ghanaian Sunset were released during Summer 2022. Each work is created with original material, using structures of traditional music to drive overall music forms.

Professor Jennifer Vokoun, Director of the Food Design Institute, was an invited speaker on Friday, Oct. 14, at the 2nd Edition of the World Food Design Day focused on Food Design for Changing Cities. This online global event, featured food design experts and representatives from five continents, discussing potential challenges and goals for designers who want to innovate, design new food systems, and empower communities of learning. Professor Vokoun represented the United States, along with Professor Audrey Bennett from the University of Michigan. Vokoun and Bennett have a forthcoming book in 2023, Critical Mapping for Sustainable Food Design for Food Security, Equity, and Justice.
Dr. Britt Cooper and members of the Walsh University Chorale presented a program to the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown Oct. 2022. The interactive program, entitled “Music in Worship Beyond the Pandemic,” featured selections by the Chorale and comments from Dr. Cooper on the spiritual need to fully restore music to worship and liturgy after COVID.

The focus of the webinar that will be broadcast Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022, is, “As an educator, you make a difference every day – and even small actions can create big waves.” Participants will learn how Dr. Heston put that principle into action at Walsh University. Dr. Heston, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, has been teaching at Walsh for 16 years. Professional Assistant Professor and Studio Coordinator Diane Belfiglio has had 4 of her past community art projects accepted into the Public Art Archive, a national archive of public art installations throughout the United States. Music on the Walls installed at the Zimmerman Symphony Center in Canton, Music on the Walls installed in Birk Center for the Arts at Walsh University, The Art of the Periodic Table installed in the John Paul II Science Center at Walsh University, and The Art of Healthy Behavior installed at the Shipley Campus of Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health in Canton are all now listed in the national Public Art Archive.
Professor Diane Belfiglio presented her paper, "Shell-shocked by the Pandemic: A Personal Account of Redesigning Studio Art Classes for Online Delivery," at the International Conference on Information Communication Technologies in Education (ICICTE) on July 8 via Zoom. Peer-Reviewed and edited proceedings will be available online with an ISBN number.

Professor Diane Belfiglio's watercolor painting, Floral Fascinations V, was accepted into the Ohio State Fair Professional Juried Art Exhibition in the Cox Fine Arts Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds. The piece was one of 300 works chosen out of over 1100 submissions. The show runs July 26- August 7. Her solo show at Peg's Gallery in Hudson, Ohio, Summer Sunshine, is also currently on display until August 9.
The Ohio Department of Higher Education awarded Walsh University a grant that enabled members of Student Conduct, Resolution Board, Title IX, Campus Police, and Prevention Education and Programming to participate in a two-day Restorative Justice training session this month facilitated by Professor of Sociology, Michelle Bemiller, Ph.D. The training complements efforts of the Cavalier Safeguard Initiative 2.0, a campus-wide, cross-enterprise project at Walsh that is funded by the Office on Violence Against Women through the U.S. Department of Justice and led by Director of Prevention Education and Programming, Joy Raub. Together, these efforts build the University’s capacity to expand informal resolution options for victims and survivors of sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence who might not want to engage in formal processes to address these situations.
Walsh University’s Division of Education Received a $65,000 Grant from the Ohio Department of Education through a collaboration with the University of Cincinnati in support of the Ohio Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement initiative. Funding is being used to sustain Science of Reading applications from past grant funding at the undergraduate and graduate levels, while supporting new partnerships with local school districts.
Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice Michelle Bemiller, Ph.D., has been asked to assist with an intensive Restorative Justice training at the University of San Diego for Catholic higher education administrators, faculty and staff interested in implementing restorative justice on their campuses.
Dr. Bemiller’s areas of specialization include Restorative Justice, diversity and inequalities, crime/deviance, gender and work, and Sociology of the Family. Her scholarship examines the use of Restorative Justice in K-12 and higher education, the inclusion of special needs children within K-12 educational environments, and caregiver coping during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On April 8th, 2022, Honors Co-Directors, Dr. Nina Rytwinski and Dr. Jennifer Clevinger presented a faculty roundtable titled "To Thesis or Not to Thesis That is the Question" at the Mid-East Honors Association Conference (MEHA) in Cleveland.
Professor Diane Belfiglio had her watercolor painting, “Lavish Lilies I,” accepted into the 79th Annual May Show currently on display at the Little Art Gallery in the North Canton Public Library. Judges selected 28 works from 130 entries. The show opened May 1 and runs through June 4, 2022.
This April, Bianca Hicks, Director of Residence Life, kicked off her tenure as the President of the Northeast Ohio Housing Officers’ Association (NEOHO). The Northeast Ohio Housing Officers (NEOHO) is a regional college and university housing organization. NEOHO provides affiliated professionals with opportunities to exchange ideas and resources, network within the region, and promote ethical decision-making within housing and residence life.
Jennifer Vokoun, Director of the Food Design Institute, and Associate Professor of Graphic Design was the invited facilitator to the DESIS (Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability) Lab at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, at the University of Michigan. She led an integrated design charrette titled “Making a Local Food Future Visible through Interactive Aesthetics” focused on a future vegetable farm theme park at Takunia Collin’s Willow Run Acres Farm in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
The Walsh University Doctor of Physical Therapy program was recognized at the 2022 Ohio Physical Therapy Association’s Transform Conference on April 9. Walsh DPT participated in the OPTA Program of the Year Challenge and received a Core Value Superlative for Excellence. The award is recognition of the community and professional service, as well as advocacy activities, DPT students participated in to demonstrate their commitment to servant leadership and the profession of Physical Therapy.

Lahaie, Ph.D., Associate Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness & Assessment, and Dr. Laci Fiala, Associate Professor of Sociology at Hiram College, had a presentation entitled “The Evolution of a Campus-Wide Syllabus Template” accepted at the 2022 Conference of the Higher Learning Commission.
Professor Kathleen M. Buttermore, Director of Academic Achievement, received the Outstanding Program of Progress Award from the National Organization for Student Success (NOSS) for her Sliders Initiative Retention Program. The Sliders Initiative focuses on students who are in good standing but are below the GPA requirements for their majors or at risk of sliding into academic probation. Professor Buttermore has worked with over 1600 students in the past five years and has achieved an 89% success rate in keeping students in good academic standing.
Dr. Karen Stock and Dr. Steven Edelson, both Associate Professors of Business in the DeVille School of Business had their conference presentation accepted: “The world at your fingertips: Experiencing global virtual teams by running X-Culture in a management classroom.”

Michelle Bemiller, Ph.D., a professor of sociology, social and behavioral sciences, in the School of Behavioral and Health Sciences has taught sociology, criminal justice and related courses for nearly a decade. Although she didn’t plan on becoming a college professor, her passion for reading, writing and sharing knowledge with others led her to a career that she believes is a good fit.
Dr. Christine McCallum, Physical Therapy program, and colleagues (Dr. Chalee Engelhard, University of Cincinnati and Dr. Leigh Murray, Graceland University) were selected for the Physical Therapy Learning Institute (PTLI) 2021 Education Influencer Award at the 2021 Education Leadership Conference for their platform presentation titled: Impact of task-fit malalignment on the Director of Clinical Education position: results of a Delphi study.

The Walsh University Doctorate of Physical Therapy program hosted the third annual Research Symposium sponsored by the East Central District of the Ohio Physical Therapy Association (a component of the American Physical Therapy Association). More than 120 professionals and students gathered to learn from 12 presentations. Walsh was very well represented, with 75% of the presentations authored by current alumni, students or faculty.
Dr. Michael Petrochuk, Interim Dean of the DeVille School of Business and Professor of Marketing & Healthcare Management at Walsh University provided his expertise to Canton’s WHBC radio on the current supply chain issue our country is experiencing for the first time in more than 95 years. He educated listeners on the cause, how it is affecting the global economy, and how long we can expect to deal with this dilemma. Funds support both the traditional undergraduate nursing licensure program as well as the hybrid Fast Track BSN. Initiatives funded through the grant will include a new partnership with Summa Barberton Hospital to provide nursing students clinical practice experiences, one-on-one mentoring and exploration of nursing roles within healthcare; a 2-3 day resident experience for high school students to gain exposure to Walsh’s campus and nursing facilities and faculty; creation of nursing-specific Career, Academics and Professional Success (CAPS) program in conjunction with the Office of Career and Experiential Education; and integration of Acadicus VR virtual reality simulation into the nursing curriculum.
Professor Diane Belfiglio's oil pastel drawing, "Ormond Beach V," is one of 23 pieces accepted into the inaugural exhibition at the Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill in downtown Canton. The exhibit is entitled "See Your Neighbor: A Celebration of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion." The show runs through December 31. "My piece depicts multiple bird species peacefully sharing a small island in a tide pool. I thought that this piece spoke well to the theme of the exhibition," said Belfiglio.
Tracey Herstich, APRN, DNP, CNP, Clinical Assistant Professor of Nursing at Walsh University provided her expertise to several media outlets covering the U.S. missionaries kidnapped in Haiti. Herstich first went to Haiti in 2011 while working for Akron Children’s Hospital. When she came to Walsh University fulltime, she continued making trips to Haiti with students wanting to serve. That program has been on hold since 2018 due to civil unrest. Although she never felt she was in danger, things have changed.

Walsh University’s School of Behavioral and Health Sciences was awarded a $1.9 million federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant for the creation of a program to address the unmet behavioral health needs in underserved populations of Northeast Ohio.The four-year grant will enhance both CHD and OT programs through inter-professional education and training for students, faculty, and clinical supervisors. The HRSA application was led by Grant Project Co-Directors Dr. Michele Tilstra, Clinical Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy, and Dr. Tiffany Peets, Associate Professor, Coordinator of Clinical Mental Health Professional Practice.

In addition, Dr. Lahaie served as panelist for the OAIRP presentation on “Institutional Ingenuity: Responding to the Virtual Needs of Today, how have IR Communities Adapted?” along with other panelists from Ohio University, Denison University, and Sinclair Community College.

The title of their article is “Empowering the novice family nurse practitioner: Promoting readiness to practice through immersion in an innovate educational strategy.”
Associate Dean of Students Tiffany Kinnard (TK) Payton graduated from the United Way Project Blueprint for Diversity Equity and Inclusion on June 4. This is the program’s second graduating class. The graduation honored 14 class participants for their completion of the program, which is designed to identify, recruit, train and place diverse volunteer leaders into policy making roles to enhance the effectiveness of nonprofit agencies.

Director of Academic Achievement Kathy Buttermore was recently notified that the Sliders Program has been recognized nationally as a Program of Promise by The National Organization of Student Success, NOSS, formerly NADE, the National Association for Developmental Education. The Sliders Program identifies students who are struggling academically and provides extra help so that they can get back on track. Program of Promise winners will be announced at the NOSS virtual conference later this month.
The Walsh University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program organized and sponsored a virtual clinical instructor credentialing course in May. The American Physical Therapy Association’s Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program is provided to clinicians and designed to cultivate leaders and mentors in the education of physical therapy students. Demand for this course was high due to many offerings being cancelled due to COVID-19. The Walsh DPT program was one of the first in Ohio to offer the course in a virtual format. All participants serve as clinical instructors to the program’s DPT students, and many were alumni of the Walsh DPT program.
Professor of Sociology Dr. Michelle Bemiller recently spent several days with the staff of Golden Key Center for Exceptional Children, Inc., as they took part in Walsh’s Restorative Justice program, focusing on the diversity of individuals.
Professor of Philosophy Dr. Leslie Whetstine was interviewed in the Medical Ethics Advisor, which is a monthly periodical that covers current clinical issues in ethics and medicine. The article is titled "Effective Remote Communication Improves End of Life Care,” and it discusses how remote communication methods were used during the pandemic to maintain vital connections between the healthcare team, patients, and their families, and considers how such approaches may continue to play a role in the post pandemic clinical environment.
Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry and Physics Dr. Timothy Smith and Professor of Chemistry Dr. Amy Heston were invited to speak this summer with the Assessment Institute highlighting Walsh’s partnership with Shimadzu. The title of the presentation is “Evaluating Essential Chemistry Laboratory Skills Utilizing Shimadzu Instruments: A Novel Partnership Driving Student Success at Walsh University.”
Megan Pellegrino, Director of Museum Studies and Director of the Hoover Historical Center, has conducted virtually presentations to more than 400 North Canton third grade students at St. Paul’s, Greentown, Orchard Hill, and virtual students throughout the month. In the first of the two presentations, Pellegrino highlighted the contributions of The Hoover Company to the development and history of North Canton. In a separate presentation, she spotlighted the 84 British children brought to North Canton by The Hoover Company during World War II and fostered by local families until the war ended and they could safely return home.

Ute S. Lahaie, Ph.D., Dean of Institutional Effectiveness & Assessment was appointed by the National Student Clearinghouse to serve on the Data Collective Advisory Committee for the Postsecondary Data Partnership (PDP). The advisory committee consists of 20 members who have been selected from over 400 public and private institutions nationwide. The Postsecondary Data Partnership (PDP) is a nationwide effort to help colleges and universities gain a fuller picture of student progress and outcomes, meet various reporting requirements, and identify where to focus their resources. The partnership is dedicated to the idea that easier access to better data helps you, the higher education professional, develop actionable insights and make informed decisions to support student success. Sophomore Education major, Tara Ebert, along with Professor Jennifer Vokoun and Dr. Ron Scott, presented the poster "The Food Design Institute: Connecting Campus and Community by Design" at the Universities Fighting World Hunger (UFWH) conference on Friday, March 26, 2021. As a founder of the Cavs Cave, Tara Ebert presented her work with the campus pantry. Director of the Food Design Institute, Jennifer Vokoun, shared some of the initiatives of the Institute, and Dr. Scott presented on the campus farm, established with a grant from UFWH, as well as some of the Food Design Institute's cross-curricular projects. Walsh University previously hosted the national summit of UFWH and Campus Kitchen in 2017.
Rachel Constance, Ph.D., Associate Professor History, presented Pandemic Stories as a part of the Portage County Deanery series on January 12. The Zoom talk was based on her Walsh University: Pandemic Stories Oral History Project, a collaboration between the Byers Institute, the Renacci Center for Civic Engagement, the Food Design Institute and the Walsh University Archives.

Christine McCallum, PT, Ph.D., Director of Clinical Education; Physical Therapy Professor, co-chaired an 11 member national taskforce which investigated the Physical Therapy Professions Clinical Education Placement Process. The 20 page report outlines 9 recommendations that pertain to various components of clinical education, including the development of a common language of the term placement process. The taskforce was the first collaborative effort between the ACAPT’s National Consortium of Clinical Educators and the Academy of Education’s Clinical Education Special Interest Group.
Diane Belfiglio, Assistant Professor of Art and Studio Coordinator at Walsh University has had her work accepted into two professional juried shows this fall. Belfiglio’s oil pastels, Ormond Beach I and Ormond VI, were two of 57 works selected from 164 entries for the Stark County Artist’s Exhibition at the Massillon Museum. The show opened September 26, 2020 and runs through January 17, 2021. Her oil pastel, Boston Bricks III, was one of 75 works selected from 471 entries in the 75th Ohio Annual exhibition at the Zanesville Museum of Art. For the first time in its history, the exhibit will run online only; opening October 22, 2020 and runs through January 8, 2021.
Patricia Berg, D.B.A., Assistant Professor of Business, was elected to serve on the Board of Directors to the Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA) last week. CBFA works to "empower Christian business faculty to transform the world for the glory of God." The CBFA is a 1,200-member national faculty association that hosts an annual conference each year and publishes two peer-reviewed journals, The Christian Business Academy Review and the Journal of Biblical Integration in Business. The 2021 conference will be held in October in Nashville, Tennessee, at Lipscomb University.

Drs. Christine McCallum, Leigh Murray, and Alexia Lairson from Physcial Therapy collaborated with Occupational Therapy Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. Michele Tilstra to complete a systematic review published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Education in September 2020. The article was entitled, “Assessment of employability skills: A systematic review of the availability and usage of professional behavior assessment instruments”. With the evidence found in the systematic review, the authors proposed a new framework for professional behavior advising for therapy students. Dr. Lairson and Dr. Tilstra presented the findings in a platform presentation for the Educational Leadership Conference in October of 2020. Their presentation was entitled, “Development of employability skills-A conceptual framework for professional behavior advising”

Patricia Berg, D.B.A, Assistant Professor of Business, presented at the Heidelberg University Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Colloquium on Friday, October 9, 2020 via a digital conference. Her presentation title is “Leveraging the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership to Foster Successful Integrated Healthcare Teams." The Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Colloquium will focus on practical implementation of utilizing interdisciplinary teams in treating and caring for those in under served and vulnerable populations. Area professionals will be sharing their knowledge and experience in this vital area.

Walsh was honored at the international Open Apereo Conference for its great work in keeping the full educational experience going in the midst of the COVID-19 upheaval. The Apereo Teaching and Learning Awards have a long history of recognizing innovation in teaching and learning. The award grew out of the Teaching with Sakai Innovation Award (TWSIA) which began in 2008 as part of the Sakai community.

Christine McCallum, PT, PhD, was recently elected the Vice-President of the Academy of Physical Therapy Education (APTE). She will begin her three year term in July 2020. The Academy of Physical Therapy Education, one of the oldest sections of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), is committed to advancing physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and physical therapy students in their roles as educators in academic, clinical and community settings. As Vice-President, she will assist the Academy President to meet the strategic plans and goals of the APTE, and serve as the liaison between the Research Committee and the BOD.

Lee Horrisberger, Professional Associate Professor Humanities, and her COM 365 Public Relations and Writing class are collaborating via Zoom with their Community Service-learning partner, the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, on the "Walk with the President." The class participated in the first virtual First Friday on April 3 by creating a video about the tour that will be shared with patrons of First Friday and with the Museum’s Stark-Tusc County Collaboration. The video project reviews how the class improved the brochure, added social media outreach, and created videos with QR codes for stops along “The Walk.”

The Walsh Museum Engagement Team (MET), the student club for Museum Studies, organized an informal symposium about the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris on Friday, Feb. 14. Drs. Rachel Constance, Chad Gerber and Katherine Brown discussed how the Gothic Cathedral has shaped or influenced their respective fields of study. The symposium explored how the accidental fire at the Cathedral in spring 2019 connected people worldwide through history, the arts, and theology.

Professional Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands Thomas Roblee represented Walsh University as one of five conductors for the concert band at the annual Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductor’s Association Honors Festival, January 18-19, 2020. In addition, five Walsh music students were selected to participate including Sarah Durma (flute), Kelly Coakley (clarinet), Kaity Bryant (trumpet), Patrick Mulhearn (trombone), and Alyssandra Howe (percussion). The OPCICA Honors Festival is an opportunity for students from private colleges and universities across Ohio to rehearse and perform a culminating concert with professional musicians. OPCICA is comprised of 24 member colleges and universities.
Walsh alum Pacifique Niyonzima ’17 was honored by Kent State University with the 2020 Rozell Duncan Student Diversity Award. This annual award recognizes students who have demonstrated, through positive interactions with others, a respect and value for differing backgrounds and points of view within Kent State University or surrounding community. Niyonzima is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations within the Kent State College of Education, Health and Human Services.
Carrilyn Long, Director of Multicultural Affairs, along with more than 80 Walsh student volunteers provided service at North Canton Church of Christ food distribution program on Saturday, January 25, in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Together, they served over 800 families.
John Kandl, Ph.D., Professor of English, presented the paper "History into Vision: Meditative Design in Micheal O' Siadhail's The Five Quintets" at the national College English Association Conference in New Orleans this past March. He will also present a version of this in the session for Walsh's board on February 7th.
Dr. Kandl has also been invited to serve as a permanent member of the editorial readers board for Slant: A Journal of Poetry, which is an international literary journal housed at the University of Central Arkansas.
Drs. Chalee Engelhard (University of Cincinnati), Christine McCallum and Leigh Murray are recipients of a 2020 Academy of Physical Therapy Education Educational Research Grant. The project title is: Assessing the Director of Clinical Education roles/responsibilities task fit impact: A Delphi Study. The grant, in the amount of $9187.75, will be based out of the University of Cincinnati Physical Therapy program.

Michael A. Frank, Director of the Walsh Fund, recently published My Christmas Story, which offers a reflection on the sacred religious story for children. A copy is available in the Br. Edmond Drouin Library. This is his first published work.

Karen Stock, Ph.D., DeVille School of Business, and students in the BUS 360 Management and Organizational Behavior class participated in a virtual team project called X-Culture. The Walsh group were among nearly 5,000 students from around the world who worked together on an international business project. Students learned to work on virtual teams with students from other countries and gained a better understanding of cultural differences and the challenges of dealing with technology and other time zones. In addition, they worked on real projects for clients such as an international airport, cosmetics company, and a luxury resort, who may put their work into practice.
