For Mathew Bagatta, a Digital Marketing and Analytics major from Hershey, Pennsylvania, relationship-building is at the heart of his Walsh University experience. Whether on the lacrosse field, in Campus Ministry, or through the Honors Program, Mathew has formed lasting connections that have shaped his journey as a student, leader, and person of faith.
As the first in his family to attend Walsh University, Mathew entered college with excitement but also a sense of uncertainty. Having been homeschooled, he wondered how he would adjust to campus life. Would he find his place? Would he make lasting friendships? Those fears quickly faded as he was embraced by teammates, classmates, and faculty who shared his values and drive. His transition became more than just adapting to college life—it became a journey of leadership and faith.
Mathew took on roles that allowed him to uplift others. Serving as captain of the men’s lacrosse team, he not only led on the field but also served as the team chaplain, organizing Bible studies and pre-game prayers. A defining moment came when he suffered a broken collarbone during his sophomore year—an injury that sidelined him for the season. What could have been a discouraging setback turned into a spiritual transformation.
“I realized that my value wasn’t just as a lacrosse player but as a soldier of Christ,” Mathew said. “That perspective changed everything for me.”
With his season on hold, Mathew dedicated himself to deepening his faith, spending more time in prayer, scripture study, and the sacraments. This experience solidified his belief that his purpose extended beyond sports—he was called to lead in faith and service.
Mathew’s deep faith has guided his involvement in campus ministry. As an altar server at campus Masses and a frequent participant in retreats, he found strength in the friendships he built with others who shared his devotion. His commitment to fostering community was further recognized when he was named Maroon and Gold Homecoming King, an honor that reaffirmed his impact on campus.
“The Walsh mission has molded me in many ways,” Mathew reflected. “Professors have challenged me to think critically and ethically in different situations and assignments. Being a part of the Honors Program, I have had volunteer opportunities to give back to the community and to help those in poverty.”
Academically, Mathew thrives in the Honors Program, where his research explores the psychology of digital marketing. An internship with a marketing and communications firm is giving him hands-on experience in his field, helping him forge professional relationships that will shape his future. He is also a member of the Sigma Beta Delta business honor fraternity, where he continues to connect with like-minded peers.
Looking ahead, Mathew plans to pursue an MBA at Walsh before launching his career in marketing. He is driven by a desire to build a strong future for himself and, one day, for a family of his own. With a foundation of faith, leadership, and a commitment to others, Mathew Bagatta exemplifies the spirit of Walsh University.
