A wide range of experiential learning opportunities, including Walsh's Student Managed Investment Portfolio (SMIP) and CFA student investment team, offer students real-world applications of the coursework.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for Finance:
Walsh's newly designed Finance curriculum was developed after careful research of peer institutions and conversations with industry professionals in order to discern skills required of a modern Finance major. The result is a curriculum consistent with current market conditions.
Integrated Curriculum. We established principles for each major, and these become themes that are carried out and reiterated through the curriculum and any experiential learning. It's part of our effort to help students retain what they're learning and to offer them a foundation to draw upon throughout their collegiate career and beyond.
Hands-on Experience. Under the supervision of DeVille School of Business faculty, students learn to navigate the financial markets and complete trades using real funds, and participate in a mandatory Finance internship.
Responsible best-practices. The importance of ethical, social, moral and personal responsibility is integrated throughout the coursework. It's embedded in our classrooms and within our experiential learning activities.
Global perspective. We delve into the impact the global environment has on the finance field. Our courses impart knowledge about how finance practices work in the global market. Students are also encouraged to participate in Global Learning experiences.
Experiential "hands-on" learning is threaded throughout the Finance curriculum. In addition, Finance majors will be required to complete a minimum of a three-credit hour internship in the Finance field. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Student Managed Investment Portfolio (SMIP) through which they work in teams and gain hands-on experience in the world of financial trading using real funds. In addition, students can join Walsh's CFA student investment team with opportunities to network with top financial professionals and to compete in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society of Cleveland's Global Investment Research Challenge. Walsh's CFA-IRC teams are back-to-back CFA Society of Cleveland IRC champions, winning the competition in 2023 and 2024. Walsh's 2023 team went on to finish in the top 17 of the Western Hemisphere!
