The Choose Ohio First program at Walsh University aims to increase the number of STEM graduates entering graduate programs or the STEM workforce to meet regional demand. The program prioritizes recruiting and supporting diverse students to build a more inclusive STEM workforce.

Walsh University fosters ethical STEM professionals by providing mentorship, academic support, and a values-based education. With a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio and a commitment to affordability through institutional aid, Walsh ensures students have access to higher education.

Walsh has established partnerships with leading Ohio employers, including Aultman Health System, Plasma Futures, ACE Laboratories, and Charles River Laboratories, to connect students with career opportunities.

Eligibility:

  • Student must enroll in one of the following majors for the Choose Ohio First Program: Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Lab Science, Computer Science, Pre-engineering, or STEM education
  • Ohio resident
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA highly encouraged according to state guidelines
  • Full-time undergraduate student
  • Incoming, first-time undergraduate or transfer student
  • Women, first-generation students, economically disadvantaged, or historically underrepresented minorities are highly encouraged to apply

To apply, students must be admitted to Walsh University and submit:

  • Walsh Choose Ohio First Application
  • Letter of recommendation from a high school or college STEM teacher
  • Responses to a series of short-answer questions about the student’s prior experiences with the STEM fields, motivation for studying in a STEM area, and future career plans
  • The priority deadline to apply for Choose Ohio First is March 1. We aim to notify students by April 1.
