A Statement from President Tim Collins on the Recent Supreme Court Rulings that Reaffirm the Primacy of Parents in Educating their Children
As president of a faithful Catholic university, I applaud the United States Supreme Court’s decisions this week that reaffirm a truth that is as old as human life: parents are the primary educators of their children. Not school boards. Not governments. Not teachers.
Parents have the inalienable duty to love their children and to provide for their health and education. Fulfilling these obligations by the authority given to them by the law of nature — not the law of man — is essential to human flourishing.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers that parents — only parents — “have the first responsibility for the education of their children.” This is a 2,000-year-old lesson from Jesus himself.
Walsh University, faithfully continuing the longest and continuously operating system of higher education in the world, acknowledges and appreciates these legal decisions that return us to the founding of America by reminding educators that we support parents — not the other way around.
