Walsh University Hosts Second Annual 22 Push-Ups Event for Veteran Suicide Awareness

On Thursday, Sept. 19, Walsh University hosted its second annual 22 Push-Ups for Veteran Suicide Awareness event, bringing together over 200 participants on the West Lawn near the David Center. Held in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month, the event shed light on the alarming statistic that 22 veterans tragically take their own lives each day.

Over the course of the two-hour event, participants performed 22 push-ups every half hour, each set serving as a reminder of the toll of veteran suicides. Among the participants, Connor Frisby completed 57 push-ups while wearing a 25-pound tactical vest, earning him an autographed football generously provided by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. More than 45 students put on the vest and performed push-ups, pushing themselves to honor veterans and raise awareness about the mental health challenges many veterans face.

Beyond the physical activity, the event fostered a sense of camaraderie as students, faculty, staff, veterans, and active-duty service members enjoyed pizza, engaged in meaningful conversations, and rallied together for the cause of veteran suicide prevention. Participants also had the unique opportunity to climb into a military vehicle, giving them a first-hand look at military conditions and gaining a deeper understanding of the experiences faced by those in service.

Leading the event was Joshua Ruiz, Walsh University's Veteran Affairs Coordinator and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Ruiz, a passionate advocate for veteran mental health, emphasized the significance of the gathering. "The statistic that 22 veterans die by suicide every day is more than just a number—it's a tragedy that touches families, communities, and the future of our nation’s heroes. This event is a call to action for all of us to raise awareness and ensure no veteran feels they have to face their battles alone," Ruiz said.

The event also highlighted Walsh University's broader commitment to supporting veterans. As a Top Ten Military Friendly® School and a Collegiate Purple Star campus, Walsh provides personalized educational programs and services for military members and their families, creating an inclusive and supportive environment for those who have served.

With the backing of sponsors like SoL Harris/Day Architecture and the dedication of the Walsh community, this event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of addressing the mental health challenges veterans face and standing together in advocacy.
