The voices of Walsh University will echo through the nation's capital as members of the the Walsh University Chorale participate in the prestigious National Memorial Day Choral Festival and Parade in Washington, D.C. Under the direction of Britt Cooper, DMA, Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts and Professor of Choral Music, the Walsh University Chorale, comprising 16 students along with Cooper and Lisa Madaffer, will take part in musical tributes honoring veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
The highlight of the Chorale's participation will be its performance at the National Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27. This nationally televised event will feature the Chorale singing a rendition of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" at the parade's opening ceremony. It is a tradition for one of the festival chorus directors to lead this performance, and this year, Cooper has been chosen for the prestigious role.
"We are honored and blessed to represent Walsh University as we perform at one of the most prestigious venues in the United States. What a wonderful way to commemorate the fallen and celebrate our veterans through music," said Cooper.
Additionally, the Walsh University Chorale will showcase its talents at various other events throughout the Memorial Day weekend, including:
Saturday, May 25: The Chorale will perform at the conclusion of a Vigil Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, presenting a 30-minute program of sacred music.
Sunday, May 26: Joining forces with a 300-voice mass choir, the Chorale will perform at the Kennedy Center in the National Memorial Day Choral Festival. The 75-minute concert, directed by Dr. Craig Jessop, former director of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and the Air Force's Singing Sergeants, will be accompanied by the United States Air Force Band, directed by Col. Donald Schofield.
Monday, May 27: The Chorale will perform during the televised National Memorial Day Parade.
Throughout the holiday weekend, they will also visit Arlington National Cemetery, take a walking tour of memorials and monuments, and attend the official National Memorial Day Concert on the Capitol lawn, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra, immersing themselves in the sights and sounds that emphasize the significance of Memorial Day.
