Walsh University Awarded New Grant to Enhance Research Lab and Benefit Faculty, Students and Ohio Businesses

Walsh University was recently awarded a second SPARQ (Shimadzu Partnership for Academic Research and Quality of Life) grant by international analytical instrument manufacturer Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (SSI). Walsh now stands among a select group of universities recognized with the prestigious SPARQ 2 grant which encompasses a comprehensive suite of some of the most state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation on the market. These instruments used in materials testing and chemical and elemental analysis will broaden the range of services that Walsh will be able to offer the community in support of Ohio businesses in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, environmental services, drug development, any many more. Walsh will also have access to scientific data and other assets as well as opportunities to leverage SSI’s scientific expertise and their vast network of national and global partners.

“Walsh has consistently demonstrated its dedication to educating students to tackle complex real-world challenges, fostering leaders in service to others through a values-based education with a global perspective,” said Heather Juzwa, Senior Field Sales Engineer for Shimadzu Scientific Instruments. “Particularly noteworthy for Shimadzu is Walsh's proactive approach to recruiting minorities into STEM disciplines and supporting their success throughout their academic journey.”

Walsh and SSI dedicated The Center for Analytical Excellence Laboratory two years ago, as a collaborative project that included the installation of nearly $1.2 million worth of new analytical equipment on campus. From micro plastics research, to tire degradation to aiding local breweries with quality control testing, Walsh's students have actively contributed to numerous highly impactful projects for the community at large.

“It’s important for us to have our students engage in the real world application of science and training the workforce of tomorrow with practical skills that will help businesses solve problems that have an impact on the bottom line,” said Dan Passerini, Executive Director of Cross-Enterprise Operations at Walsh University. “We are proud of our partnership with Shimadzu as both organizations seek to enhance the quality of life for the people they serve.”
