In its second year, Walsh University’s Southern Soirée Dinner & Auction, an event conceived by President Tim and Drenda Collins to help bridge the financial gap for Walsh’s most high-need students and fulfill their dreams of a college education, exceeded it’s $100,000 goal by raising $134,000 in one night. It’s the most raised for a single event in Walsh’s history and an increase of nearly 85% over last year. Through the sponsorship of Magnolias with each Magnolia helping to build the “Tree of Dreams,” a silent auction, and a live auction with donations from Walsh employees, area companies, and friends of the University, guests were provided with multiple opportunities to support a worthy cause while donning their finest southern attire and enjoying a wonderful southern buffet. More than 20 student volunteers were also on-hand to assist with the night’s festivities.
“The one thing we all have in common when we look at these students is, we see potential. We see in them the potential of what they’ll do for their family, employers, communities, and our nation. This is what drove the Brothers of Christian Instruction to found Walsh University,” said President Tim Collins. “What you are doing here tonight in helping our students, is providing them what they need to take that potential and turn it into something - helping those students who are in the most need and are “right there,” and if they had a little more, they could cross the finish line. That’s what this evening is all about.”
The southern themed event, designed to celebrate art and culture as well as the Collins’ heritage, featured a student Barbershop Quartet, pianist, and guitar entertainment, a whiskey river saloon, more than 40 silent auction items, and 10 live auctions to bid on. Walsh’s Interim Vice President of Advancement Teresa Fox oversaw the operations and emceed the event.
“I called it the little event with a big purpose because that’s true. What we are doing is helping our students to fulfill their dream and discover their life purpose,” Fox said. “Our hope is that the event continues to grow exponentially every year. Our students deserve that!”
