For the first time in history, Walsh University’s Cavalier football team will play a regular season game “at home” on Larry Staudt Field at 2 p.m., on Saturday, September 3, versus Tiffin University. North Canton Mayor Stephan Wilder will have the honor of doing the inaugural game coin toss. Tickets are required and will be available beginning at 12 p.m., on Monday, August 29, through 5 p.m., on Friday, September 2. Tickets will also be available for purchase (cash only) on game day at the entrance of the tailgate lot. Tailgating begins at noon and is permissible with a permit.
“It’s time to bring our Cavalier football team home,” said Interim Vice President for Athletics, Athletics Director Jason Fautas. “We have been anticipating this day for decades. Not only does it boost school spirit, it gives us a true home-team advantage that fans and alumni can now enjoy on campus.”
The stadium serves as the home field for multiple Cavalier athletic teams including football, lacrosse, soccer and track. Women’s lacrosse held the first contest at the stadium on April 22. Since the “opening” in mid-April, the women’s lacrosse team played four games, including the 2022 Great Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Men’s lacrosse played its regular season home finale, and football held its Spring game. The annual Walsh tune-up track meet occurred with the new stadium in use. Men’s soccer played their first game last night and will play again Saturday, Aug. 27 and women’s soccer will play Sunday, Aug. 28,
The stadium, a multi-year project, has been completely donor-funded.
- Phase one (fall 2020): existing grass field replaced with turf, named Larry Staudt Field
- Phase two (spring 202): new scoreboard offering spectators a large playback video screen
- Phase three (spring 2022): construction of the west side of the stadium, the William and Kathleen Brauchler Press Box and spectator seating for approximately 1,000 people
Once additional donor-funding has been secured, phase four will begin construction of the east side of the stadium including a promenade area, press box and seating for approximately 2,500. For now, the Cecchini Complex will continue to serve as the locker room for athletes.
Previously, the Cavaliers played at North Canton Hoover's Memorial Stadium, Fawcett Stadium/Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium and GlenOak's Bob Commings Field.
