Not even the rain could dampen the spirits of those attending the groundbreaking of the new athletic stadium at Walsh University’s Larry Staudt Field on Wednesday, September 15, a project that began as a promise to students nearly 30 years ago.
“The promise was we would build for our athletics, quality facilities that would bring the community together,” said Walsh President Tim Collins, Ed.D.
North Canton Mayor Stephan Wilder, a former NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer player, was on hand to congratulate Walsh on this great occasion.
“It’s a wonderful addition to the University,” said Wilder. “You all should be very thankful and proud of what you’re going to have here in the future. I can’t wait to come to and sit in this stadium and watch you play.”
Cav Nation team captains representing football, lacrosse, soccer, and track and field – the teams that will compete at the new stadium - were joined by Wilder, Dr. Collins, Vice President and Director of Athletics Dale Howard, Vice President of Advancement Eric Belden, and President Dean Olivieri and Vice President of Commercial Construction Michael Lombardi of Fred Olivieri Construction Company as they turned dirt on phase three of the four-stage plan. Walsh alumna Christina Trompower, a constituent service coordinator, also presented a certificate commemorating the construction project on behalf of U.S. Representative Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16).
Phase one was completed in fall 2020 and replaced the existing grass field with turf. Phase two followed in spring 2021 with the addition of a new scoreboard offering spectators a large playback video screen. Phase three will begin next week with construction of the west side of the stadium. Additions will include the William F. Brauchler Press Box, to commemorate the generosity of the Brauchler family and their support of this initiative, and spectator seating for approximately 1,000 people. Phase three is expected to be completed by March 2022.
