Walsh University honored our nation’s armed forces with several campus events including the annual Flag Raising Ceremony and Holy Mass in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel. Sponsored by Walsh University’s Student Government Veterans Commission, American flags lined the campus quad and the names of Walsh University armed forces members, past and present, were prominently displayed on the Global Learning Center video wall and celebrated on social media. Walsh active military students are currently completing studies in Corporate Communication, Nursing, Computer Science, Education, Accounting, Biology, Museum Studies, Finance, Master of Science in Nursing/Doctorate in Nursing Practice, and Counseling and Human Development.
Held outside of Farrell Hall, the Flag Raising Ceremony included remarks from Walsh’s Student Government (WUSG) President and Air Force National Guard Senior Airman Blaise Rudmann, Student Elections Commissioner and Air Force Reserves Senior Airman Ellie Smith, a blessing by Rev. Thomas Cebula and remarks by Walsh President Dr. Tim Collins, who served as a Senior Officer in the U.S. Air Force with multiple senior command experiences during his 23 years of service in the U.S. and abroad.
“This is an opportunity for both celebration and also it’s a proper moment to be somber as well. Today we honor our American heroes. These are men and women who have decided to set aside their pursuits to answer the call to military service,” said Dr. Collins. “This is an opportunity to reflect on those who actually gave their lives so that we could have our freedom. Today, while we stand at Walsh University, there are young men and women standing watch around the world… All of us should think deeply about making a life that is worth dying for, so that our veterans know they are making sacrifices that were worth giving their lives for.”
For 10 consecutive years, Walsh has consistently been recognized as a Military Friendly Institution by G.I. Jobs magazine. This year, in honor of Veterans Day, Walsh also created a new matching gift program to help provide vital support for student programs benefiting current and future military service members.
