The S.W.A.T.S. Team

Who are the S.W.A.T.S Team?

The S.W.A.T.S. team was created by the University Registrar/Director of Multi-Cultural Academic Services as a retention initiative to assist a greater number of the University's multi-cultural student population.  Members of the S.W.A.T.S. team are student "ambassadors" for the Academic Support Center and Multi-cultural Academic Services unit. Each student member voluntarily serves as a part of the team under the supervision of the University Registrar/Director of Multi-Cultural Academic Services.

What is the S.W.A.T.S. Team's purpose on campus?

S.W.A.T.S. team members are trained to assist their peers with basic academic related questions.  Areas covered in their training may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Registration Procedures
  • Add/drop Procedures
  • Graduation Application Deadlines
  • Ordering of Transcripts Procedures
  • Declaring Majors and Minors Procedures
  • Finding Assigned Academic Advisors
  • Navigating the Cavalier Center
  • Referrals to Appropriate Offices (Learning Resources, Career Services, Financial Aid etc.)
  •  Enrollment Verification Procedures

Additionally, S.W.A.T.S. team members assist the University Registrar/Director of Multi-Cultural Academic Services with facilitating the "Multi-cultural Student Fire-side Chats" twice each semester.  Team members may also assist the Director of Multi-Cultural Student Affairs and the Academic Support Center with projects when needed.

What are the benefits of serving as a member of the S.W.A.T.S. Team?

The benefits of serving as a S.W.A.T.S. team member will include an opportunity to help others succeed academically by directing them to vital academic resources. Team members will gain a wealth of knowledge that will also help them achieve greater academic success and career preparation. Also, the benefit of potential life-time relationships may be established, not to mention, an increase in personal self-esteem.

Members can include S.W.A.T.S. team participation as part of their resumes to reflect their ability to work effectively with diverse populations and to demonstrate their interpersonal communication skills.

This is also a great opportunity to help others transition more easily into University culture.

How are members of the S.W.A.T.S. Team identified on campus?

Each S.W.A.T.S. team member receives a black polo shirt with gold-colored engraving for easy identification. These shirts may be worn during the weeks of academic advising and registration. Team members may also be identified by their S.W.A.T.S. name badge.

How can students become a  member of the S.W.A.T.S. Team?

Any student interested in becoming a S.W.A.T.S. Team member should contact the University Registrar/Director of Multi-Cultural Academic Services in Farrell Hall (Student Service Center).
