FOOTBALL: Cavs (0-1) Look to Rebound
Walsh (0-1) opened their 13th season on the wrong end of 49-7 rout at West Liberty State last Saturday. The loss was the worst in Cavalier history, and only their third opening day loss. The loss was the fourth straight for the Cavs dating back to last season. Walsh's last four-game losing streak came in 1998, when they dropped the final four games of the season. Walsh has never lost five straight games. They will be on the road for the second straight week, when they play in Greensburg, PA against Seton Hill University at 2 pm on Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on News-Talk 640 AM WHLO.
West Liberty scored in every quarter; leading 10-0 after one quarter, 31-0 at halftime, and 41-0 after three. The Hilltoppers led 49-0, when Walsh avoided the shutout on Jeff Tallman's (So., Canton, OH/Perry) two-yard score with 24 seconds to play. Walsh turned the ball over three times on interceptions and four times on fumbles. West Liberty rolled up 612 yards of total offense, while holding the Cavs to 219 yards. Walsh also lost senior tailback Antwain Reine' (Dayton, OH/Trotwood-Madison), when he suffered a broken right leg early in the third quarter. It is feared that he is lost for the season.
Walsh and Seton Hill (0-1) are meeting for the second time. Walsh won 23-7 at Seton Hill last year. Jeff Tallman rushed for 134 yards and scored a touchdown. Seton Hill, like West Liberty a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, lost their season opener 51-24 at Slippery Rock on August 30.
MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (2-0) Open With Back-to-Back Fantastic Finishes
Walsh (2-0) opened the season with finishes that would have made NFL Films proud. Walsh won their first two games with goals in the final seconds, defeating Roberts Wesleyan 2-1 in overtime and Siena Heights 3-2 at the Walsh hosted Subway/Comfort Inn Soccer Classic. This week the Cavs travel to Arkansas for the John Brown Fall Classic. The Cavs meet host John Brown at 3 pm on Friday, then play Oklahoma City University on Saturday at 12:30 pm.
Lamar Skeeter (Fr., 5-10, Dayton, OH/Fairmont) scored one-minute into overtime to give the Cavs a 2-1 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Friday night. Jeremy Hess (Sr., 6-3, Damascus, MD/St. Johns) and Alex Birtcher (Jr., 6-1, Napoleon, OH/HS) assisted on the winning goal. Femi Arogundade gave Roberts Wesleyan a 1-0 lead just 1:30 in the game. The visitors held the lead until the 81-minute mark, when Casey Eck (Sr., 6-1, North Canton, OH/Hoover) tied the game on an assist from Corey Dekker (Jr., 6-1, Mansfield, OH/Lexington). Walsh out shot Roberts 15-6. Walsh keeper Ben Pflum (Jr., 6-1, Napoleon) stopped four shots in goal.
Alex Mogilnicki's (Sr., 6-1, Lakemore, OH/Springfield) was the hero on Saturday night, as he scored the winning goal with 90 seconds to play to lift Walsh to a 3-2 win over Siena Heights. Mogilnicki's game-winner came on a restart. Siena Heights led 1-0 in the first half, when Casey Eck tied the game on an unassisted goal. Eck gave Walsh a 2-1 lead in the second half on an assist from Lamar Skeeter. Siena Heights tied the game at the 84-minute mark.
The last time the Cavs started the season 2-0 was 2005, when they won their first three games and started the season 7-0-1.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (2-0) Meet Tri-State in Home Opener on Tuesday
After opening the season with road wins at the Cougar Cup in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Walsh (2-0) opens the home season against Tri-State University on Tuesday at 4 pm. Walsh then hits the road again to meet Roberts Wesleyan on Friday (7 pm) and Daemen on Saturday (2 pm). Walsh's 2-0 start is their first since the 2004 season.
CROSS COUNTRY: Teams' Open Season with AMC Preview Meet on Saturday
Walsh's men's and women's cross country teams open the season on Saturday at home, as they host the American Mideast Conference Preview Meet. The women's race begins at 10 am and the men's race at 10:45 am. This is the first of two AMC Previews, as Walsh will also host the AMC/Region IX Championships on Saturday, November 3.
Walsh's men return 10 letter winners for veteran Head Coach Dan McCallion. The Cavs finished 52-17-1 last season. The Cavs women also return 10 letter winners for Head Coach Al Campbell. The women finished 46-29 last season.
