FOOTBALL: Cavs Rout Trinity
NAIA No. 17 Walsh improved to 2-1 after defeating Trinity International 43-14 at Fawcett Stadium on Saturday. This week, the Cavs travel to Quincy (Ill.) for their second straight MSFA crossover game. The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network (AM 900 WCER/News-Talk 640 WHLO, internet www.wcer.us, www.sportsradio1350.com at 1 pm.
Walsh rolled-up 511 yards of total offense in the win. Tailback Clinton Blossomgame (RS-Fr., Columbus, OH/Beechcroft, OH) rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight week, totaling 135 yards. He scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter. Blossomgame is second in the Mid-States Football Association with 3322 yards and a 107.3 per game average. Quarterback Marc Pullen (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) completed 11-21 passes for 209 yards, with two touchdowns. He hit Rob Lash (Sr., Shelby, OH/HS) for a 33-yard score and Mike McGill (So., Barberton, OH/Coventry) on a 19-yard scoring strike. Lash led the Cavs with four catches for 125 yards. Walsh’s special teams provided the first score, when Eric Peavy (Jr., Cleveland, OH/Warrensville Heights, OH) blocked a punt, and Joe Copeland (So., Akron, OH/North) picked it up and scored from eight yards out in the first quarter. Walsh led 7-0 after one quarter and 19-0 at the half. Walsh’s defense allowed only 233 yards and held to Trinity to 10 first downs and 5-17 on third down conversations. Walsh totaled 26 first downs, with 272 yards on the ground and 230 through the air.
Quincy improved to 2-1, with a 28-25 non-league win at Culver-Stockton (MO). The Red Hawks scored 15 fourth quarter points in the win. Quarterback Craig Moore ran for four touchdowns (10, 1, 1, 1) in the win. Walsh leads the all-time series 3-0.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs Fourth at National Catholic Meet
Walsh (22-4) finished an impressive fourth at the National Catholic Meet, held in South Bend, Indiana on the campus of the University of Notre Daemen on Friday. This Saturday, they will compete at the College of Wooster.
Brendan McKee (Jr., Akron, OH/St Vincent-St. Mary) paced the Cavs with a fifth place (26:04). Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) was next for Walsh, placing 18th (27:08). Evan Heck (Fr., Navarre, OH/Central Catholic) placed 29th (27:28), Jon Winnyk (Jr., Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) 41st (27:47) and Chris Zundel (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) 49th (28:03).
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs 11th at National Catholic Meet
(South Bend, IN) Walsh (18-11) placed a very respectable 11th at the National Catholic Cross Country Championships, held in South Bend, IN on Friday. This Saturday, they will compete at the College of Wooster.
Kristen LeFever (So., Alliance, OH/Marlington) paced the Cavs, finishing 28th in a time of 19:47. Andrea DiNinno (Jr., Harrison City, PA/Greensburg CC) was next, placing 36th (19:54). Delameter (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) was 58th (20:18), Megan Case (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS) 11th (21:06) 101st (20:59) and Lindsay Cooper (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) 108th (21:05).
MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Split in Indiana, Fall at Home to Bethel
Walsh (4-2) lost two out of three matches last week. The Cavs lost their first game of the season, falling 2-1 in overtime to Bethel, and then split games in Indiana. This week, the Cavs travel to Houghton (NY) for an American Mideast Conference crossover game on Wednesday (7 pm), then open the AMC South season at home on Saturday against Shawnee State University (3-3) at 7 pm.
Walsh suffered its first loss of the season, losing 2-1 in overtime to Bethel College last Tuesday. Walsh opened the scoring on a goal from Dan Harlan (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Green) at the 38-minute mark of the first half, on an assist from Alex Mogilnicki (Sr., 6-1, Lakemore, OH/Springfield). Bethel tied the game seven minutes into the second half, and won it four minutes into overtime. Walsh out shot Bethel 11-5, and had six corner kicks to Bethel's five. Ben Pflum’s (Jr., 6-1, Napoleon) had three saves in goal.
Grace College (2-3-1) scored three first-half goals, and held on for a 3-2 over the Cavs (3-2) at Grace on Saturday. Grace scored three first half goals, before Alex Birtcher (Jr., 6-1, Napoleon, OH/HS) scored Walsh's first goal, on an assist from Clint Merck (Fr., Randolph, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas), at the 35-minute mark of the first half. Walsh's Lamar Skeeter (Fr., 5-10, Dayton, OH/Fairmont) scored an unassisted goal in the second half. Walsh out shot Grace 22-5 and led in corner kicks 6-0.
Lamar Skeeter's overtime goal gave Walsh a 3-2 overtime come-from-behind win over the University of Saint Francis (2-4-1) on Sunday. Skeeter scored at the 102:16 mark on an assist from Alex Birtcher to give Walsh the win. Birtcher opened the scoring in the first period, with an unassisted goal at the 23:12 mark. USF's Brad Lohman then tied the game at the 32:32 mark. Loham then gave USF the lead at the 73:07 mark, on an assist from Nick Fowler. Walsh's Aaron Davis (So., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale) then tied the game on Birtcher's assist at the 77:33 mark.
Skeeter leads the Cavs with 13 points, on six goals and one assists. Alex Birtcher is next with nine points, on three goals and three assists.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Streak Comes to a Halt
Walsh's (5-2, 0-1) five-game winning streak came to a halt, when they dropped back-to-back games to two NAIA top 20 teams. On Friday, the Cavs were handed their first loss by NAIA No. 12 Ohio Dominican, in the American Mideast Conference South opener for both teams. The Cavs then dropped their second straight game, when they were beaten 5-2 by NAIA No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan. This week, they travel to Geneva College on Wednesday, before meeting Shawnee State (5-1-1) in an AMC South battle on Saturday at 5 pm.
Walsh fell l3-2 to Ohio Dominican University (6-0, 1-0 AMC S) on Friday night. Amanda Patrick (So., Medina, OH/Cloverleaf) gave Walsh a 1-0 lead, on an assist from Chrissy Summers (So., Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) four minutes into the second half. Ohio Dominican then tied the game, and then took the lead with back-to-back goals just 13 minutes apart in the second half. Walsh's Chrissy Perna (Jr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) then tied the game at 2-2 with 4:40 to play in regulation. Ohio Dominican scored the winning goal 5:45 into the overtime.
Walsh fell for the second time in two days, losing 5-2 to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday night. Wesleyan scored three first half goals, at the 5:00, 14:10 and 16:07 marks to take a 3-0 lead. Chrissy Perna then scored for the Cavs at the 29:23 mark to cut the lead to 3-1. But Indiana Wesleyan tallied a little over a minute later to take a 4-1 halftime lead. Rachel Naumann (Fr., Hinckley, OH/Highland) scored at the 50:30 mark to trim the lead to 4-2, before Indiana Wesleyan iced the game, with their final tally at the 67:06 mark. The Cavs were out shot 10-5, and Wesleyan had nine corner kicks to Walsh's two. Walsh keeper Rachel Burcher (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had eight saves.
Chrissy Summers and Rachel Naumann each lead the Cavs with 11 points, on four goals and three assists. Chrissy Perna is next with nine points, on four goals and one assist.
VOLLEYBALL: Cavs (10-3) Win Three of Four Matches and AMC Opener/McDonald, Barry on All-Tourney Team
NAIA No. 16 Walsh (10-3, 1-0) won three out of four matches last week, including their American Mideast Conference South Division opener at Urbana. The Cavs then won two out of three matches at the Olivet Nazarene Homestead Classic on Friday at Saturday. This week, they will play on Friday and Saturday at the Indiana Tech Tournament.
Walsh opened defense of its AMC South Division regular season crown, with a sweep at Urbana University on Tuesday night. The Cavs downed the Blue Knights 30-20, 30-26 and 30-12. AMC Setter of the Week Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 45 assists for the Cavs. Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) led the Cavs with 13 kills. AMC Libero of the Week Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led the defense with 17 digs, while also adding three aces. Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) added 11 kills and Ashley Yuhas (5-9, Fr., Elyria, OH/HS) contributed 11 digs.
Walsh improved to 9-2 after defeating Spring Arbor College at the Olivet Nazarene Homestead Classic on Friday. The Cavs downed Spring Arbor 30-16, 30-21 and 30-18. Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) paced the Cavs with 12 kills and two blocks. Jill Barry dished out 46 assists and Heather Hernandez led the defense with 17 digs. Megan Kelly added 11 kills and two blocks and Erica Parker and Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) each had two aces.
Walsh split its final two matches at the Olivet Nazarene Homestead Classic on Saturday. The Cavs downed Olivet Nazarene 30-27, 30-17 and 30-28, but were then defeated by Campbellsville 28-30, 28-30 and 22-30. Megan McDonald paced the Cavs with 14 kills in the win against Olivet. Jill Barry dished out 42 assists, with 11 digs and four aces, while Heather Hernandez led the defense with 28 digs. Erica Parker and Megan Kelly each had 3.5 blocks and Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) added 10 kills. McDonald and Kelly paced the Cavs with 12 kills each in the loss to Campbellsville. Barry dished out 34 assists, Parker added two blocks and two aces, while Hernandez had a team-high 24 digs. Megan McDonald and Jill Barry were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
