FOOTBALL (5-0): Cavs Post 5th Straight Win, 23-7 at Seton Hill
NAIA No.6 Walsh remained unbeaten at 5-0, with a 23-7 non-league win over Seton Hill University (1-4) on Saturday. This is the third time the Cavs have started a season at 5-0. They also turned the trick in 1999 and 2002. They have never started a season 6-0. This week they meet Taylor University in their Mid-States Football Association opener at Fawcett Stadium at 11 am. In 1999, Taylor was the team that stopped the Cavs from going to 6-0 with a 33-21 win at Fawcett Stadium. Walsh finished 7-3 in 1999 and 8-3 in 2002.
Walsh scored ten points in the first and second quarters at Seton Hill, and led 20-0 at the half. Quarterback Marc Pullen (So., Akron, OH/Ellet) scored on a two-yard run for the first score of the day. Mike Lum (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) then kicked the first (45) of his three field goals to extend the lead to 10-0. Tailback Jeff Tallman (RS Fr., Canton, OH/Perry) raced 57 yards for a score in the second quarter and Lum kicked his second field goal (42) and Walsh led 20-0 at the half. Seton Hill snapped Walsh's string of 17 quarters without allowing a TD, when they scored on a 11-yard pass in the third period to cut the lead to 20-7. Lum finished the scoring with a 38-yard FG in the third quarter. Tallman led all rushers with 134 yards on 20 carries. Walsh's defense picked off three passes, two by defensive back Joe Phinisee (Jr., Warren, OH/Harding), and one by linebacker Bryan Howe (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet). Outside linebacker Kory Dollinger (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) had nine tackles (seven solo), with a sack and two fumbles forced and strong safety Craig McConnell (So., Massillon, OH/Washington) had eight tackles. The Cavs forced five turnovers on the afternoon.
The Cavs are 5-1 all-time against Taylor University, and won 45-14 in Upland, Indiana last year. The Cavs have won the last four meetings. Taylor (1-3, 0-1 MSFA E) played very well on the road at Urbana on Saturday, before falling 14-7. Their only win was a 16-0 shutout over Greenville College on September 16.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (23-3): Cavs win Co-Ed Classic
Walsh captured the Co-Ed Classic, held on campus Friday. The Cavs (45) won over second place Malone (78). Brendan McKee (So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) placed first in a time of 16:23. Chris Zundel (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) was second (16:51), Mike Groholy (Jr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) was fifth (16:58), Jon Winnyk (So., Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) seventh (17:08) and Josh Rogers (Jr., Hartville, OH/Lake) tenth (17:28).
Walsh is at the All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday. The Cavs finished sixth at the meet last year.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (22-10) Cavs Win Co-Ed Classic
Walsh won the Co-Ed Classic, held on campus Friday. The Cavs (45) won over second place Malone (78). Kristen LeFever (Fr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) paced the Cavs with a second place finish in a time of (20:17). Lauren Blase (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) was third in a time of 20:47, Marie Pasuit (Fr., Stow, OH/HS) finished fifth (21:08), Andrea DiNinno (So., Harrison City, PA/Greensburg CC) sixth (21:14) and Lindsay Cooper (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) seventh (21:16).
Walsh is at the All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday. The Cavs finished seventh at the meet last year.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs Second at Walsh Invitational, at Siena Heights on Saturday
Walsh finished second at the Walsh Invitational last week. Trevecca Nazarene University fired a final round 336 to win the Walsh University Invitational, held at Sanctuary Golf Course in North Canton on Monday and Tuesday. This week, they travel to Siena Heights, Michigan, for the Siena Heights Invitational.
Trevecca Nazarene finished with a two-day total of 682 and bested the second place Cavs by seven strokes. Walsh led after the first round, but shot 346 on the final day for a two-day total of 689. Tiffin University finished third (712), Malone College fourth (713), Ohio Dominican University fifth (722) and Ursuline College sixth (897). Tiffin's Jen Trow finished as tournament medalist with a two-day total of 153 (74-79).
Christine Haver (Sr., Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) shot a final round 89 and finished 6th at 170 (81-89). Tammy Schumacher (Jr., Whitney Point, NY/HS) and Kaley Foster (So., Manchester, OH/HS) tied for 8th at 171. Schumacher finished 84-87 and Foster 86-85. Andrea Ferriell (Sr., Hartville, OH/St. Thomas Aquians) shot a final round 85 and finished 13th at 178 (93-85). Christina Trbovich (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) shot a final round 92 and finished 184 (92-92), Stephanie Spitzer (So., Akron, OH/Green) shot 91 and finished 101 (100-91) and Kaitlin Sesock (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) shot 96 to finish with a 210 (105-96).
MEN'S SOCCER (6-4, 1-2 AMC S): Cavs Split AMC Games
Walsh (6-4, 1-2 AMC S) split a pair of American Mideast Conference South games last week. They began the week, with an exciting 1-0 win over Urbana University, but fell 2-0 at Ohio Dominican University on Saturday. This week, they play at Shawnee State University on Wednesday (4 pm) in an AMC South game and travel to Geneva College for an non-league game on Friday night (7 pm).
Tim Eddy's (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) first half goal lifted Walsh over Urbana University on Tuesday night. Eddy scored on an assist from Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) in the first half. Walsh out-shot Urbana 15-3 and controlled play for a majority of the game. Urbana had seven corner kicks to Walsh's six. Cavs keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had two saves in recording the shutout.
Walsh was blanked 3-0 at Ohio Dominican University (8-3-1, 2-0 AMC S) on Saturday. The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime, and then put the game away with second half goals at the 50th and 70th minute mark. Walsh was out shot 14-7. Ben Pflum had 10 saves.
WOMEN'S SOCCER (3-6, 1-2 AMC S): Cavs Win Streak Snapped
Walsh (3-6, 1-2 AMC S) had its modest two-game win streak snapped, with back-to-back road losses this week. Walsh lost 1-0 at Otterbein College on Tuesday, then fell 2-0, at Ohio Dominican University in an AMC South tilt on Saturday. The Cavs look to snap the two-game skid against Urbana University at home on Wednesday in an AMC South game, then play at Tiffin University in another AMC S game on Saturday (1 pm).
Walsh had its modest one-game win streak snapped 1-0 at Otterbein College (6-1-2) on Tuesday. Otterbein was ranked 23rd in the latest NCAA Division III poll. The Cardinals' Sara Vasbinder scored the game-winner at the 65-minute mark of the second half. Otterbein out-shot the Cavs 13-10 and led in corner kicks 7-4. Walsh keeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had four saves.
Walsh was shutout 2-0 at Ohio Dominican University (3-6-1, 2-1) in an American Mideast Conference South Division game on Saturday. The Panthers' Jen Burgei scored both goals in the first half, to provide the home team with all the offense they would need. Burgei tallied the first goal at the the 14-minute mark and the second at the 20:52 mark. The Cavs were blanked, despite out shooting ODU 14-11. Cavs' keeper Rachel Burcher had 10 saves.
VOLLEYBALL (20-1, 4-0): Streaking Cavs Extend Win Streak to 15, Ranked 21
The 21st NAIA ranked (Next ranking released on Wednesday) Cavs (20-1, 4-0) remained unbeaten in the American Mideast Conference South, and extended their winning streak to 15 matches, with road wins over Shawnee State University and The University of Rio Grande last week. This week, they meet archrival Malone College at home on Tuesday (7 pm), then travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday for an AMC South tri-match with Urbana University. The Cavs meet the Blue Knights at 1 pm and the host Cougars at 3 pm.
Walsh won its 14th straight match with a three-game sweep at Shawnee State University (6-6, 0-4 AMC S) on Friday. Walsh swept the Bears by scores of 30-27, 30-14 and 30-22. The Cavs were led by Jamie Herr (5-9, Sr., Attica, OH/Seneca East) with 11 kills, while Megan McDonald (5-10, So., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) added 10. Jillian Barry (5-5, Jr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 42 assists and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Jr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had 14 digs.
Walsh completed their weekend sweep, with a three-game sweep over the University of Rio Grande on Saturday, by scores of 30-27, 30-22, and 30-27. Jamie Herr had a double-double, 14 kills and 13 digs. Jillian Barry had 52 assists for the match. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Jr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led with two aces, and contributed 15 digs. Amy Police (5-4, Fr., Perry, OH/HS) led the defense with 16 digs and Erica Parker (6-0, So, Concord, OH/Mentor) had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Megan McDonald (5-10, So., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) contributed 11 kills while, Parker and Hilary Dattilo (5-10, So., Mason, OH/HS) each had two blocks.
Setter Jillian Barry leads the AMC in assists, averaging 12.82 per game. Erica Parker is fourth in attack percentage (.355), with teammate Danielle Evancho (5-9, Fr., Strongsville, OH/HS) fifth (.352). Heather Hernandez is seventh in digs (5.28) and Megan McDonald is seventh in kills (3.93).
On Tuesday (7 pm), when the Cavs host conference rival, Malone College, fans will have the chance to win prizes throughout the match from various sponsors, including Italo's, Jimmy John's, Wal-Mart, Arby's, CiCi's Pizza, Smoothie King, and Leno's Family Restaurant.
