FOOTBALL: Cavs Fall 13-10 to Third Ranked St. Xavier

Despite holding NAIA No. 3 Saint Xavier University (5-0, 1-0 MSFA Mideast) to one touchdown and 13 points, NAIA No. 12 Walsh (3-2, 0-1 MSFA Mideast) fell 13-10 on Saturday, in the Mid-States Football Association Mideast opener for both teams.  This Saturda, the Cavs to Urbana University (4-1, 1-0 MSFA Mideast) for a MSFA Mideat contest at 2 pm.  The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network on News-Talk 640 WHLO and on the AM 900 WCER.  The game will also be broadcast live on the internet at www.wcer.us and www.whlo640.com.

Saint Xavier came into the game averaging 44.5 points, per game, but could just muster one touchdown against Walsh’s hungry defense.  The only score of the first half came on Shane Longest’s 43-yard field goal, which gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead at the 10:32 mark of the first quarter.  The game remained scoreless late in the first half, when it looked as if the upset minded Cavs would at least tie the game.  Walsh’s Eric Buchanan (Fr.,. Green Cove Springs, FL/Clay) kicked what looked like a game-tying 37-yard field goal with 56 seconds to play in the first half.  But when Saint Xavier was called for a personal foul, Walsh opted to take the penalty, and a first and goal on the ten yard line.  But the move back fired, when Marc Pullen’s (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) pass was intercepted on the one-yard by Casey Widenbacher on a third and goal play with seconds left in the half.

Longest then gave the Cougars a 6-0 lead with a 31-yard field goal, at the 4:13 mark of the third quarter.  Walsh would mount a 10-play, 65-yard drive, and take the lead on a one-yard run by Clinton Blossomgame (R-Fr., Columbus, OH/Beechcroft) at the 2:29 mark of the third quarter.  Buchanan’s PAT gave Walsh a 7-6 lead.  Bill McKeon then made the key play of the game, when he returned Buchanan’s kick 52 yards to Walsh 42-yard line.  The Cougars would march 42-yards on nine plays on the short field, and take the lead for good on quarterback Billy Yeo’s one-yard plunge.  Longest then kicked the extra point to give Saint Xavier a 13-7 lead with 11:08 to play.  Walsh would drive to the Cougar’s 25-yard line, but would have to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Buchanan, to trim the lead to 13-10.  It would Walsh’s final opportunity.

Yeo, despite missing most of the third quarter, completed 21 of 29 passes for 158 yards.  McKeon led all receivers with 131 catches for 91 yards.  Walsh’s Marc Pullen completed 13 of 28 passes for 130 yards and three interceptions.  Blossomgame became the first back to rush for over 100 yards against the Cougars, when the tallied 114 yards on 30 carries.  He leads the MSFA witih 603 yards rushing, for a 120.6 per game average.

Walsh and Urbana meet for the 13th time, all-time, with Walsh having won the every meeting thus far.  The Cavs won 24-7 at Fawcett Stadium last year.  The Blue Knights won their third straigiht game last Saturday, wallopping Taylor University 51-6 in a MSFA Mideast game.  Urbana exploded for 34 points in the second quarter, after a scoreless first period.  Tailback Kirk Hannah rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Ryan Gelhart passed for 197 yards and two scores.  Hannah is second in the MSFA in rushing (590 yds.), averaging 118.0 yards per game.  Urbana is averaging 30.6 points per game, while allowing 21.2.
