FOOTBALL (9-3, 4-2): Cavs Fall 42-3 at Saint Francis in Playoff Debut

Walsh's (9-3) finest season came to a halt, as they fell 42-3 to the University of Saint Francis (IN) (11-0) in a first round NAIA Playoff game last Saturday. The 39-point loss was the most lopsided in team history. It was Walsh's first-ever post season game. The NAIA top ranked Cougars now advance to the quarterfinals. Walsh closes the season with three straight losses, with the offense failing to reach the end zone in all three games.

The game started on a high-note, as the Cavs marched to the Cougar seven-yard line, before having to settle for a 21-yard Mike Lum (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) field goal. Walsh's 3-0 lead did not last long however, as USF countered with a 13-play, 63-yard drive, which ended on Daniel Carter's four-yard run to give USF the lead at 7-3 with 3:34 to play in the first quarter. It was the first of Carter's three touchdowns. The first quarter ended 7-3. The Cougars then turned a Marc Pullen (So., Akron, OH/Ellet) interception into points, when they marched 69 yards in 12 plays, and scored on Doug Wasylik's four-yard run at the 8:53 mark of the second period. USF led 14-3 at the half. The Cougars began to salt the game away in the third quarter, when Carter raced 69 yards for a score on the third play of the half to extend the lead to 21-3, just 1:19 into the third quarter. USF would score once more in third quarter, and then score two more touchdowns in the fourth period for the final margin.

Turnovers again plagued the Cavs, as they turned the ball over six times, five by interceptions. Walsh turned the ball over 16 times in the final three games. USF rolled-up 513 yards total offense, with most of the yards coming in the second half. Walsh totaled 209 yards of total offense. Rob Lash (Jr., Shelby, OH/HS) caught seven passes for 50 yards, while Pullen completed 10 passes for 128 yards.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Open AMC Play

NAIA No. 7 Walsh (1-1) has been idle since their loss to Daemen College (88-71) on November 11.  But this week, they hit the hardwood three times and open defense of their American Mideast Conference South Division title at Tiffin University on Tuesday (8 pm).  The Cavs then remain home for Thanksgiving, hosting Kentucky Christian on Friday (7 pm) and the College of Wooster on Saturday (7 pm).  The Tiffin and Wooster games will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us

Walsh point guard Brandon Weems (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) missed both regular season games, after turning his ankle in the exhibition game at Ohio State.  The Cavs hope Weems is ready for the AMC opener at Tiffin.  Walsh finished 15-3 in the AMC South last season and has won back-to-back crowns.  Walsh leads the all-time series with Tiffin 49-21 and won twice last season.  The Dragons fell to 0-2, after losing 87-53 to Southern Indiana on Saturday, then dropped to 0-3 after getting shellacked 97-35 at the University of Akron on Sunday.  Walsh and Kentucky Christian are meeting for the first time.  The Knights evened their record at 5-5, after winning the Milligan College Tournament (TN).  The Knights beat Boyce College 98-65 and the host team, 89-87 in the championship game on Saturday.  Walsh and the College of Wooster are meeting for the first time since 1995-96.  Walsh leads the all-time series 12-3 and has won the last five meetings.  The Scots are coming off of wins in the Al Van Wie Tournament and are 2-0.  They defeated Mount Union College 85-60 last Saturday.  The Scots are currently ranked No. 1 in NCCA III by Street and Smith's and No. 2 by D3hoops.com.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Earn First Win at Seton Hill Tournament

After dropping their first four games, Walsh (1-4) captured its first win of the season at the Seton Hill Tournament this past weekend. After losing to Hillsdale College on Friday, the Cavs posted their initial win under first-year Head Coach Laurel Wartluft against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.  Earlier in the week, the Cavs lost their home opener to Siena Heights.  This week, they open AMC South play at Tiffin University on Tuesday (6 pm).

Walsh lost its home opener, 67-51, to Siena Heights University on Tuesday.  Walsh led 2-0 and 4-2, but never again in the contest.  Siena built an 11-point halftime lead at 32-21, as the Cavs shot just 31% from the field in the first half, and turned the ball over 15 times.  After falling behind by 15 points (45-30) in the second half, Walsh went on 10-0 run to trim the lead to five points at 45-40.  Siena rallied however, and extended the lead back to 10 at 52-42 and coasted the rest of the way.  Eulise Dickerson (So., Warrensville Heights, OH/HS) was the only Cavalier to reach double figures with 15 points.  Laura Panozzo led Siena Heights with 17 points and ten rebounds.

Walsh (0-4) remained winless, after losing 68-55 to Hillsdale College at the Seton Hill Tournament on Friday.  Despite 22 first half turnovers, Walsh trailed by only five points at the half at 30-25.  Hillsdale snapped a 25-25 tie, with a 5-0 in the final 3:06 of the first half.  Hillsdale controlled the second half, as the Cavs turned the ball over 16 more times, in being out scored 38-30.  Brittani Maddox (R-Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with 14 points, while adding seven rebounds.  Ingrid Brainard (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) had 10 points and five assists, Eulise Dickerson added a team-high nine rebounds and Chrissy Summers (Fr., Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) scored ten points off the bench.

Walsh (1-4) won its first game of the season, downing Rutgers-Newark 75-54 in the consolation game of the Seton Hill Tournament on Saturday.  Walsh shot .536 (10-19) from the field in the first half, in building a 28-18 half time lead.  The second half was all Walsh, as they shot a blistering 72% on 18-25 in coasting to their first win. The Cavs were sparked by the play of freshman Chrissy Summers off the bench.  Summers shot 7-8 from the floor, and 4-4 from three-point, to lead the Cavs with 20 points.  She was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Ingrid Brainard added 16 points, four assists and three steals.  Walsh shot .636 (28-44) from the floor, and .750 (6-8) from three-point.

Walsh won both regular season meetings with the Dragons last year, including their AMC Playoff game.  The Cavs lead the all-time series 22-18.  The Dragons fell to 1-2 on the season, after losing 67-66 to Ohio Valley on Saturday at the University of Findlay Tournament.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Six Cavaliers Earn NAIA Scholar-Athlete Recognition

Walsh placed six student-athletes on the NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete team, the most of any  NAIA institution.  Selected athletes must be at least a junior academically, and carry at least a 3.50 grade point average. The following were selected from Walsh; Tim Geabler (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak), Mike Groholy (Jr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge), Tyler Immel (Sr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway), Sean McBride (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic), Alex McCallion (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak), Andy Schulz (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway).

VOLLEYBALL (35-3, 15-1): Cavs Fall in Title Match of NAIA Region IX/X Tournament/Miss out on Nationals

Walsh's (35-3) NAIA National Tournament dreams ended, when they were upset by Cedarville University (45-7) in the Region IX/X Championship game on Saturday.  The Yellow Jackets will now advance to the NAIA National Tournament in Columbia, MO.  Walsh, despite their 16th place ranking in the final regular season poll, and having one of the finest rankings in the NAIA, will not receive an at-large bid.

Walsh (35-2) defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene University 30-21, 30-21, and 30-20, to reach the championship match. Walsh was led by senior, Jamie Herr (5-9, Sr., Attica, OH/Seneca East) with 19 kills and 27 digs.  Jillian Barry (5-5, Jr., Salem, OH/HS) led the offense with 55 assists.  Erica Parker (6-0, So., Concord, OH/Mentor) contributed a team-high 4 aces and Laura Galbraith (6-0, Fr., Akron, OH/Revere) led with 2.5 blocks.

Cedarville handed Walsh its first sweep of the season, 23-30, 26-30 and 26-30 in the title match.  The loss snapped the Cavs 13-match win streak.  Jamie Herr led the Cavs with 19 kills and Megan McDonald (5-10, So., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) added 15.  Jillian Barry handed out 55 assists, and Heather Hernandez (Jr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led with 19 digs.  Danielle Evancho (5-11, Fr., Strongsville, OH/HS) and McDonald had .5 blocks.
