Humanities

 

As part of the core of the Catholic intellectual tradition, the Division of Humanities offers courses that address the questions of human meaning and existence. “The calling of the humanities,” according to the late J. Irwin Miller,  former CEO of a Fortune 500 company (and philosophy major as an undergraduate), “is to make us truly human in the best sense of the word. ” Questions of moral and ethical behavior, as well as questions of leadership, change, and creativity are all part of the humanities curriculum. And, the humanities curriculum reflects the increasingly global nature of our world with courses that reflect the diversity of human experience across the globe. Most important, the humanities help students to discover the truth of human experience and to integrate this truth as part of a well-rounded educational experience.

The Humanities curriculum is built around strengthening foundational skills of insightful analysis, excellent research and writing skills, and principles of effective and ethical leadership. These foundational skills enable the graduate to better adapt to changing conditions and evolving technologies and to utilize their skills in a manner that both advances their vocational goals and reflects the moral and ethical values of a Catholic higher education.
