MEN'S BASKETBALL: (8-2) Six Game Win Streak Snapped in Final Seconds at Wooster
NAIA No. 3 Walsh (8-2) had its six game winning streak snapped at the buzzer at the College of Wooster on Saturday night. Brandon Johnsons' pull-up jumper, just inside the lane, gave the Scots an 89-88 win. Josh Johnson (6-4, Jr., Warren, OH/Harding) gave the Cavs an 88-87 lead with a conventional three-point play with 4.8 seconds to play. This week the Cavs travel to Hawaii for the Hoop-N-Surf Invitational. The Cavs meet Westminster College on Wednesday at 3 pm (EST) and Eastern University on Thursday at 3 pm (EST).
Both teams played extremely well at Wooster. The Cavs shot .523 (34-65) from the floor and .579 (11-19) from three-point. Walsh trailed 45-43 at the half and then fell behind by nine points (63-54) before rallying in the second half. Joe Shardo (6-5, Jr., Yorkshire, OH/Versailles/Univ. MO-Rolla) played his finest game as a Cavalier, scoring 21 points on 8-12 from the floor and 5-5 from three-point. All five Walsh starters reached double figure scoring. Brandon Weems (Sr., 5-10, Akron, OH/Saint Vincent-Saint Mary) added 16 points, six assists and five rebounds. Eder Araujo (7-0, Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete Maria de Freitas) led the Cavs with seven rebounds, while adding 14 points. Corey Jones (6-3, Sr., Avon Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Josh Johnson each added 11 points.
Eder Araujo has regained the scoring lead from Corey Jones. Araujo is averaging 14.3 points, while Jones is scoring at a 14.1 clip. Jones is shooting .567 from the field and .604 from three-point. Joe Shardo upped his scoring average to 10.5 points and is shooting .614 from the field and .545 from three-point.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs (5-5) Drop Two of Three
Walsh (5-5) dropped two out of three games last week and stand 5-5 on the season. The Cavs fell at Indiana University (PA) (78-47) last Monday, rallied to beat Point Park University (79-68) at home on Thursday and lost at Siena Heights University (MI) (51-39) on Saturday.
The Cavs turned the ball over 35 times in a 78-47 loss at Indiana PA. Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) paced the Cavs with 16 points. Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) pulled down ten rebounds. The Cavs played a strong second half in defeating Point Park University 79-68. Walsh shot .520 from the floor in the second half and out scored the Pioneers 47-34 to post the come from behind win. Walsh trailed 34-32 at halftime. Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy) shot 7-12 from the floor and paced the Cavs with 22 points. Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) added 13 points and Askew again shined on the boards with 15, to go with 12 points. In Saturday's low scoring 51-39 loss at Siena Heights, Askew was the lone bright spot with nine points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Walsh shot just .230 (14-61) from the field and turned the ball over 31 times.
Leah Seaman and Katie Berry are each averaging 12.8 points per game. Berry is averaging 4.6 rebounds and is shooting .467 from the field. Cara Bedard is averaging 11.4 points, shooting .506 from the field and is second in rebounding (6.2 RPG). Damoniq'e Askew is now the teams rebound leader and is averaging 6.8 per game.
