MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs (5-3, 3-1 AMC S) Fall in OT Thriller at Cedarville

NAIA No. 17 Walsh (5-3, 3-1 AMC S) dropped its first American Mideast Conference South game, losing an overtime thriller (87-76) at Cedarville University last Saturday.  This week, the Cavs host the University of Saint Francis (IN) on Tuesday (7pm), then host the Hoops for Healing Classic on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday, Malone College (5-4) meets Daemen College (5-5) at 6 pm, followed by the Walsh-Virginia Intermont (1-11) contest at 8 pm.  On Saturday, Malone and Virginia Intermont play at 1 pm, followed by Walsh and Daemen at 3 pm.  All proceeds go directly to the American Liver Foundation.  Tickets are $5.00 each night and are good for both games played that day.  All Walsh games will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER, and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

Cedarville jumped on the Cavs early, shooting over .500 from the field and three-point for most of the first half; in taking a 35-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.  The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 17 points (38-21) in the second half, before the Cavs climbed back into the game.  It took the Cavs less than ten minutes to wipe out the 17-deficit, and take a one-point lead at 52-51 with 8:45 to play.  The game would remain tight the rest of regulation, with Brandon Weems (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) tying the game in the final seconds at 72 to send the game to overtime.  After Weems scored the tying basket, a mad scramble in front of the Cedarville basket resulted in a collision that would force Walsh?s Derek Chappell (Sr., Cleveland, OH /Lutheran East) and the Jackets' Grant Walker to leave the game.  The two hit heads, suffering cuts to the forehead.  Both would require stitches, Chappell a total of 18 and Walker 14.  Chappell is questionable for Tuesday's game with Saint Francis.  Walsh scored first in overtime with a free throw, but it would be their only lead.  Chris Beals hit one of his five three-pointers off the bench to give Cedarville the lead for good.  That started a run of seven straight points and Walsh got no closer than five points the rest of the way.  Chappell shot 9-12 from the field in leading the Cavs with 18 points.  Corey Jones (Jr., Avon Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) added 16 points, Weems 13 and Eder Araujo (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete Maria de Freitas) 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Walsh meets NAIA No. 14 University of Saint Francis (IN) on Tuesday night.  The Cougars are off to an 8-1 start, with their only loss coming at the hands of NAIA top ranked Huntington.  USF is led by the NAIA's top rebounder in Mike Campbell (F, 6-4, Sr.), who is averaging 13.2 RPG.  Trey Eaton (G/F, 6-4, Sr.) is their leading scorer, averaging 21.0 ppg.   The all-time series is tied at 2-2.  Walsh won the last meeting 76-68 at the Notre Dame Classic last season.

Walsh will host the annual Hoops for Healing Classic on Friday and Saturday.  Former Walsh head coach, the late Steve Loy, lost his battle with liver cancer in February of 2004.  Loy coached the Cavs from 1992 up until his death and is the all-time leader in wins (254) at Walsh.  Walsh and Daemen are meeting for the second time.  Daemen bested the Cavs 88-71 in New York on November 11.  Dewan Stroud led Daemen with 26 points, hitting 6-7 three-pointers.  Derek Chappell led the Cavs with 25 points and 10 rebounds.  Walsh leads the all-time series 9-4.  Walsh and Virginia Intermont are meeting for the first time.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs (2-7, 1-3 AMC S) Win First AMC Game

Walsh (2-7, 1-3 AMC S) lost its second straight game, falling 82-56 in an American Mideast Conference South game at Cedarville University on Saturday.  This week, the Cavs host the University of Indiana (PA) on Saturday at 11 am.

Walsh stayed close with the NAIA 7th ranked Yellow Jackets for most of the first half, before Cedarville snapped a 20-20 tie with a 22-9 run, and led 42-29 at the break.  The second half was all Cedarville.  The Yellow Jackets opened the half with a 21-7 run to extend the lead to 63-36, and led by as many as 33 points (81-48) with 3:30 to play.  Ingrid Brainard (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) led the Cavs with 15 points and five assists.  Jessie Miller (R-Fr., Strasburg, OH/HS) added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench, Monika Mitchell (So., Garfield Heights, OH/HS) tallied ten points and Eulise Dickerson (So., Warrensville Heights, OH/HS) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high ten rebounds.

Indiana (PA) is NCAA II and stand 4-3 on the season.  This is the first time that the two teams have played.  Ingrid Brainard is the only Cavalier scoring in double figures and is averaging 11.6 points per game.  Despite the 2-7 start, the Cavs are playing well defensively, holding opponents to 61.8 points and to .385 shooting from the floor.
