BASEBALL: (12-17, 6-2) Weather Halts Play
After winning five out of six American Mideast Conference North Division games the previous week, Walsh (12-17, 6-2 AMC N) played just twice last week, and lost both games. Walsh dropped a non-league twin bill at Mount Vernon Nazarene, and then watched as Mother Nature wiped out a weekend series with Seton Hill University. Walsh will try to play Seton Hill on Monday (H) and Tuesday (A), both are double headers. Walsh gets back into AMC North play on Friday, as they host Point Park University (1 pm/DH). They will then play at Point Park on Saturday (2 pm/DH). Point Park is 1-0 in AMC North play.
Walsh led Mount Vernon Nazarene 4-2 in the last half of the sixth inning when the Cougars exploded for 10 runs in a 12-4 win. The Cavs were then flat in the nightcap, falling 11-1.
Rollin Matsui (Sr., Thornhill, ONT/Westmount) leads the Cavs with a .438 average. Shortstop Chad Campbell (Jr., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) is hitting .304 with 11 RBI, and posted an 11-game hitting streak earlier in the season. First baseman Jason Pettigrew (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) is hitting .304 and leads the team with 18 RBI. Outfielder Ryan Indorf (Jr., Massillon, OH/HS) and third baseman Kade Klick (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) have each driven in 13 runs. Right-hander Mike Dougherty (So., Canton, OH/McKinley leads the team with four wins (4-2) and has a team-best 2.84 ERA and right-hander Andy Schon (Sr., Akron, OH/Coventry) is 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA.
SOFTBALL: Cavs (14-19, 3-3 AMC S) Drop Three Non-League Games
Walsh (14-19) lost three non-conference games last week . They lost twice at Tiffin University on Tuesday, and once at Notre Dame College on Wednesday. Their home double header with Mountain State was postponed and will be played on April 29. This week, the Cavs host Ohio Valley on Tuesday (3 pm/DH), Seton Hill on Wednesday (3 pm), and play AMC South double headers at home against Cedarville University on Friday ( 3pm) and at Shawnee State University on Saturday (1 pm).
Walsh lost 10-2 and 9-6 at Tiffin. Jamie Lewis (Fr., North Olmstead, OH/HS) was 2-3 in game one, and Amanda Patrick (Fr., Medina, OH/Cloverleaf) was 2-2. Krystal Sherry (Fr., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) started game two and was victimized by four errors in the 9-6 loss. Sherry was 3-4 at the plate with a double. Walsh made six errors in the 8-5 loss at Notre Dame, and Sherry was again victimized on the mound. At the plate, she continued her hot hitting, going 2-4. Jessica Hudnall (Fr., Akron, OH/Ellet) was 2-4 with two RBI, and Chelsea Saunders (Fr., Hinckley, OH/Highland) was 2-2.
Walsh's bats have come to life, as they have raised their team batting average 42 points, to .288 in the last 13 games. Jamie Notch (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) is hitting a team-leading .353, and is having a triple crown like-season, as she also leads in homeruns (4) and is second in RBI (18). Sherry is hitting .340 and has taken over the RBI lead with 19. Lewis is batting .338 and Hudnall .333. Sherry leads the pitching staff with a 2.09 ERA and is 5-5. Dana Hartings (Jr., Chickasaw, OH/Marion Local) leads with six wins, and has 96 strikeouts in 97 innings, and a 3.10 ERA.
MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (10-3, 3-0) 3-0 in AMC
Walsh (10-3, 3-0 AMC) went 1-1 last week, but improved to 3-0 in the American Mideast Conference with a 9-0 win over Notre Dame College. The Cavs loss came at Aquinas College (MI) on Thursday. This week, the Cavs host rival Malone College in an AMC match on Tuesday (3 pm), and play at Cedarville University, in another AMC match on Saturday (12 pm).
The Cavs one-two punch of Stephen Webster (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) and Dexter Mahase (Jr., La-Romaine, Trinidad) continue to play well. They are a combined 19-7 at first and second singles. Webster is 9-4 playing mainly first singles, while Mahase is 10-3, playing mostly at number two. The two make up the Cavs top doubles team, and are 9-3. Sean Smith (Sr., Edgewater, NY/Bradenton Academy) is 10-3 at third singles. Freshman Justin Collins (Lexington, OH/HS) is 7-5 at mostly fourth singles, and Greg Kerschbaum (Jr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 9-4 at mostly fifth singles. Andy Coutts (Sr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) is 7-6 at sixth singles. Smith and Collins are 8-1 at second doubles and Kerschbaum and Nick Grahame (Sr., Louisville, OH/ST. Thomas Aquinas) are 7-2 at third doubles.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (8-3, 3-0) Streak at 8, Remain Unbeaten in AMC
Walsh's (10-3, 3-0 AMC) winning streak is at eight matches, and they remain undefeated in American Mideast Conference action. Their only match last week, a non-conference match at West Liberty State was postponed and will be played on Monday (4/9). The Cavs will host Tiffin University in an AMC match on Wednesday (12 pm). They play two AMC matches, at Ursuline College on Thursday (3 pm), and home to Shawnee State University on Saturday (1 pm).
The Cavs top six have been very consistent during the eight-match win streak. Number one singles player Kristen Cady (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 6-5 on the season, but has won six of her last seven matches. Jenamarie Ianni (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) is 6-5 at second singles and has won five straight matches. The duo is also 7-4 at first doubles. Lindsey Cady (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 6-5 at third singles and has won her last five matches. Ingrid Brainard (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) is 7-3 at fourth singles, and is 6-1 with Lindsey Cady at third doubles. Megan Navarre (Jr., Indianapolis, IN/Center Grove) is 8-3 at fifth singles, with an eight-match win streak. Freshman Hilary Rossi (Warren, OH/JFK) is 6-4 at mostly sixth singles, with three straight wins. Rossi and Jen Yost (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) are 3-2 at third doubles.
