BASEBALL: Cavs (13-11, 7-4 AMC N) Have Tough Week, Meet Malone at Munson Stadium Next
It was a tough week of AMC games for the Cavs (13-11, 7-4 AMC), as they dropped four of five games. Walsh looks to bounce back at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, with an AMC twin bill against Malone College (1 pm). The Cavs then host Rio Grande on Friday (1 pm) and Shawnee State on Saturday (1 pm) in a pair of AMC double headers. The Cavs are in fifth place in the AMC.
With each team rallying in their half of the seventh inning, Walsh and Malone (15-6, 4-2) split an AMC double header at Walsh last Tuesday. Walsh rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opener 7-6. With two outs and nobody on, Jeff Nicholas (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) and Matt Marshall (Sr., New Boston, OH/Glenwood) produced back-to-back singles. Duston Walter (So., Malvern, OH/HS) then singled to center on a 3-2 pitch to scored Nicholas with the tying run, and when Malone's center fielder bobbled the ball, Walsh coach Tim Mead waved around Marshall with the winning run. Steve Weirich (So., Minerva, OH/HS) picked up the win for the Cavs. In game two, Malone rallied with three runs in the seventh, to gain the split with a 4-2 win. Luke Yetzer (Fr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) took the loss in relief for the Cavs. Malone's Ryan Baechel smashed four home runs in the two games.
In a game that lasted almost four hours (3:48), Walsh fell 7-6 in ten innings to Urbana University in an AMC game at Athletes in Action in Xenia, Ohio on Friday night. The second game was postponed, and will be rescheduled at a later date. The games were moved to Xenia earlier in the day and the Cavs and Blue Knights did not take the field until 7:30 pm. Urbana scored six runs in the first four innings against Walsh starter Jared Roberts (Fr., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius). Walsh rallied and tied the game in the top of the sixth inning with six runs. The game remained deadlocked until the tenth, as Walsh's Mike Schaeffer (Fr., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) worked 2.1 scoreless innings and Steve Weirich, who allowed only a run in 3.2 innings. Weirich (2-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing the winning run on a bases loaded walk in the tenth. Jeff Nicholas drove in two runs for the Cavs and Jason Pettigrew (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) had two singles and a double.
Walsh lost a pair of AMC games at Ohio Dominican University on Saturday, by scores of 4-1 and 1-0.
