BASEBALL: Cavs (22-22, 9-3) Even Mark

Walsh won five of seven non-conference games last week to even their overall record at 22-22.  The Cavs have only been .500 twice, at 21-21 and 22-22.  At one point, they were actually one game over .500 (22-21), after winning the first game of a doubleheader against Urbana University.  The Cavs are still in second place in the American Mideast Conference North Division with a 9-3 mark.  Walsh plays one non-conference doubleheader this week, on Saturday at Ohio Dominican University. 

The Cavs scored 73 runs last week.  After losing 11-6 at Mount Union College, the Cavs took four straight games from Myers University.  Kade Klick (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) drove in three runs and Jason Pettigrew (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) two runs in a 15-3 win at Myers on Friday.  Mike Dougherty (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) was the winning pitcher and improved to 6-3.  In game two, the Cavs hammered Myers 14-3.  Kyle Lynn (Sr., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) improved to 2-1 in picking-up the win.  Klick and Rollin Matsui (Sr., Thornhill, ONT/Westmount) each drove in three runs and Mike Suliks (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) was 3-3.  Walsh then swept Myers 12-2 and 9-4 at home on Saturday.  Andy Schon (Sr., Coventry, OH/HS) was the winner, and is 6-3.  Schon and Dougherty are tied for the staff lead in wins.  Pettigrew had three hits, Mark Kelly (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) had three hits and two RBI, and Jeff Nicholas (Jr., Navarre, OH/Perry) homered.  In game two, Pat Conley (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) had three hits and Derek Gordon (Sr., Brampton, ONT/Centennial) drove in two runs.  Chris Norris (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) started and picked-up the win to improve to 5-3.  Walsh and Urbana split, by identical 10-7 scores.  Pettigrew drove in three runs and homered in the opener, which Walsh won.  Conley also homered and Tim Hromada (Fr., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) had three hits and three RBI.  Steve Weirich (Fr., Minvera, OH/HS) started and earned his first collegiate victory.  Conley homered in game two and Ryan Indorf (Sr., Massillon, OH/Washington) drove in three runs in the nightcap. 

Rollin Matsui is hitting a team-leading .414.  Matsui has two home runs, 20 RBI, and a team-best .557 slugging percentage.  Jason Pettigrew leads the team with 31 RBI and six doubles, and is hitting .328.  He drove in 10 in Walsh's seven games last week.  Walsh is now hitting .303 as a team.  Mike Dougherty has a team-best 3.40 ERA and Andy Schon leads the staff in innings pitched (63.1) and strikeouts (55).

SOFTBALL: Cavs (20-25, 6-8 AMC S) Stumble in AMC

Walsh (20-25, 6-8 AMC S) lost five out of six American Mideast Conference games week, and fell from third to fifth in the Southern Division.  With the regular season AMC South slate complete, the Cavs will have to have help in order to qualify for the post season.  They are idle this week.

Walsh fell 9-3 and 16-4 to Malone College last Tuesday.  Krystal Sherry (Fr., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) was 3-4 in game one and Danielle Evancho (Fr., Strongsville, OH/HS) drove in three runs.  Laura Schmidt (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) was 3-3 in the nightcap.  On Thursday, Walsh lost twice at Shawnee State, 6-0 and 3-2.  On Saturday, the Cavs split in their home finale with the University of Rio Grande.  Walsh won game one 7-6.  Jamie Notch (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) singled in the tying run and winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Megan Pisciotta (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) picked-up the win and is 6-9 on the year. 

Krystal Sherry leads the Cavs with a .350 average, and with 13 doubles and 23 RBI.  She is also leading the pitching staff with an 8-8 mark and 2.44 ERA.  Jamie Lewis (Fr., North Olmsted) is hitting .324 and Laura Schmidt (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) .313.  Schmidt is tied for the homerun lead (four) with Notch.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (14-3, 6-0) Capture AMC Crown for 11th Straight Time

Walsh (14-3, 6-0 AMC) defeated Ohio Dominican University 9-0 last Monday to win their 11th straight American Mideast Conference regular season championship.  The Cavs then blanked Myers University in a non-conference match on Wednesday.  Walsh will now look to return to the NAIA Nationals, when they play in the NAIA Region IX Tournament next week at Cedarville University (2-4).  The Cavs string of nine straight national appearances came to an end last May, when they were upset in the region title match. 

The Cavs one-two punch of Stephen Webster (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) and Dexter Mahase (Jr., La-Romaine, Trinidad) continue to play well.  They are a combined 25-7 at first and second singles.  Webster is 13-4 playing mainly first singles, while Mahase is 14-3, playing mostly at number two. The two make up the Cavs top doubles team, and are 11-4.  Sean Smith (Sr., Edgewater, NY/Bradenton Academy) is 14-3 at third singles.  Freshman Justin Collins (Lexington, OH/HS) is 10-5 at mostly fourth singles, and Greg Kerschbaum (Jr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 13-4 at mostly fifth singles.  Andy Coutts (Sr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) is 11-6 at sixth singles.  Smith and Collins are 8-1 at second doubles and Kerschbaum and Nick Grahame (Sr., Louisville, OH/ST. Thomas Aquinas) are 7-2 at third doubles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (14-4, 9-0) Win AMC Title

Walsh's (14-4, 9-0 AMC) defeated Malone College (9-0), Geneva College (9-0) and Cedarville University (7-2) last week to win their first AMC championships since 2000.   Walsh will now look to return to the NAIA Nationals, when they play in the NAIA Region IX Tournament next week at Cedarville University (2-4).  Walsh last played at the NAIA Championships in 2005.

The Cavs won all three matches last week despite have number two singles player Jenamarie Ianni (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) out with the flu for the Malone and Geneva matches.  Ianni returned for the Cedarville match.  Number one singles player Kristen Cady (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) won 2-3 matches last week and is 10-8 on the season.  Ianni won her only match and is 10-6 at second singles.  The duo is 11-5 at first doubles. Lindsey Cady (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) won all three matches and is 11-7; Ingrid Brainard (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) also won all three matches and is 14-3.  Brainard and Cady are 12-2 at third doubles.  Megan Navarre (Jr., Indianapolis, IN/Center Grove) is 12-4 and Hilary Rossi (Fr., Warren, OH/JFK) is 12-5.  Rossi and Jen Yost (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) are 7-4 at third doubles.

MEN'S GOLF: Cavs (9-15) 9th at Malone

Walsh (9-15) finished 9th at the Malone Invitational at Tannenhauf CC last Friday and Saturday.  The Cavs are at the Cedarville University Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.  On Monday, they play at th eBeavercreek Country Club and on Tuesday, play at the Country Club of the North.  Notre Dame Invitational, this Wednesday at Mayfield CC, in Cleveland at 10 am.

Walsh shot a 622 at Malone College.  David Rose (Sr., Marietta, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a 153 (77-76).  Mike DiFabbio (Sr., Steubenville, OH/Central Catholic) was next with a 154 (79-75).  Chad Coombes (Sr., Medina, OH/Buckeye) shot 157 (79-78), Mike Lenartowicz (Jr., Canton, OH/Perry) 162 (83-79) and Kevin Tournoux (Jr., Lakewood, OH/HS) 162 (83-79)   On Walsh's B Team, Alan Dattilio (Sr., Salem, OH/West Branch) led with 151 (74-77).  David Russell (Sr., Glasgow, Scotland/Cumbernauld) shot 156 (77-79), Jesse Green (So., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) 159 (78-81), and Sam Troyer (So., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) and Pat Moro (So., Warren, OH/JFK) shot 163.  Troyer fired rounds of 84-79 and Moro 88-75.

MEN'S TRACK: Cavs 7th at AMC Championships

Walsh finished seventh at the two-day American Mideast Conference Championships held at Houghton College last Friday and Saturday.  This Saturday, the Cavs are at the Hillsdale Relays.

Brendan McKee (So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Wary) paced the Cavs with a third place finish in the 3000m steeplechase (9.54.05) and a sixth place finish in the 800m (1:55.25).  Alex McCallion (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) was fourth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 56.51.  The Cavs also picked-up the following sixth place finishes;  Jerome Jackson (So., Euclid, OH/HS) in the discus (140-02), Pete Tsaftarides (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) in the shot (45-10.50), Mike Groholy (Jr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) in the 5000m (15:52.90), and Tim Geabler (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) in the 10,000m (33:44.90).

WOMEN'S TRACK: Cavs 6th at AMC Championships

Walsh finished sixth at the American Mideast Conference championships, held at Houghton College last Friday and Saturday.  This week, the Cavs are at the Hillsdale Relays on Saturday.

Danielle Cofojohn (Fr., Diamond, OH/Southeast) paced the Cavs with a second place finish in the discus (130-02).  Maria Mudd (So., Suffield, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) (17:37.58) and Vicki Tomsic (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) (18:38.32) were third and sixth respectively in the 3000m race walk.  Jackie Misiak (So., North Royalton, OH/HS) finished fifth in the 100m hurdles (16.45), Tess Francis (Sr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) was sixth in the 400m hurdles (1:08.62), Abbie Sullivan (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) was sixth in the pole vault (7-00.25) and Abbey Marshall (So., New Boston, OH/Glenwood) was sixth in the javelin (102-11).
