BASEBALL: Cavs Win Streak at Seven, Unbeaten in AMC

Walsh (12-7, 6-0 AMC) remained hot, and unbeaten in the American Mideast Conference, with five more wins last week.  The Cavs have won seven straight games and are in first place in the AMC.  This week, the Cavs play three AMC double headers.  Walsh is home to Malone College on Tuesday (2 pm), and play on the road against Urbana University (1 pm) on Friday and Ohio Dominican University (1 pm) on Saturday.

Walsh banged out 14 hits in a 9-3 non-conference win over Mount Union College last Monday.  The Cavs scored twice in the first inning, and led 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jeff Nicholas (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) hit a three-run home run to give them a 6-2 lead.  Nicholas also doubled and drove in four runs.  Steve Weirich (So., Minerva, OH/HS) came on in relief in the fifth inning to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the season.  Mark Kelly (So., Norton, OH/HS) doubled and singled and drove in a run.  Jason Pettigrew (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) had two hits and two RBI and Ryan Indorf (Sr., Massillon, OH/Washington) had two hits and two RBI.

Walsh improved to 4-0 in the AMC, with a double header sweep of Point Park University last Friday.  The Cavs out-slugged Point Park 9-7 in the opener.  Chris Norris (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) was the winning pitcher and improved his record to a perfect 4-0.  Luke Yetzer (Fr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) picked-up his first save of the season.  Chad Campbell (Sr., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside), Ryan Indorf, Jason Pettigrew and Mike Suliks (So., Norton, OH/HS) each had two hits.  Indorf then powered the Cavs to a 9-2 win in the nightcap, with five RBI on a first inning three-run home run and two-run double in the second.  Suliks had two more hits and an RBI and Matt Marshall (Sr., New Boston, OH/Glenwood) had two hits.  Mike Dougherty (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) started and was the winning pitcher for the Cavs, improving to 2-2.

Walsh completed its series sweep of Point Park the next day, taking two games in Pittsburgh.  The Cavs scored big in each game, winning 16-11 and 13-6.  After jumping to a 7-0 lead in game one, Walsh needed a six-run 7th inning to put the game away.  Alan Frame (Sr., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) picked up his first win (1-0) of the season.  Mike Suliks drove in two runs with a double and two singles.  Duston Walter (So., Malvern, OH/HS) had two hits, as did Jeff Nicholas (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) and Mark Kelly (So., Norton, OH/HS).  Freshman Jared Roberts (Berea, OH/St. Ignatius) earned the win in game two to improve to 2-0.  Suliks had two doubles and Kelly had two singles and a double.

Walsh is batting a lofty .323 and is averaging 7.6 runs per game.  Mark Kelly and Ryan Indorf are each on nine-game hitting streaks, with Mike Suliks sporting an eight-game streak.  Indorf is hitting .415 with seven doubles, four home runs and 29 RBI.  If his RBI pace continues, he will have a good chance to break Chad Lahna's single season mark of 58 set in 2005.  Jason Pettigrew is batting .389 with 16 RBI; Suliks is hitting .357, Marshall .344 and Kelly .328.

SOFTBALL: Cavs Remain Unbeaten in AMC North/Sherry No-Hitter

Walsh remained unbeaten in the North Division of the American Mideast Conference, after sweeping Ursuline College last week.  The Cavs are 4-0 in the North and 13-5 overall.  Walsh swept Shawnee State, but fell twice to Mount Union College in two non-league twin bills last week.  This week, they host Notre Dame College in an AMC double header on Tuesday (3:30 pm).  The two teams switched sites due to the weather.  Walsh then plays two non-league double headers on Wednesday (at Tiffin University) and Saturday (home Urbana University).

Walsh swept Shawnee State University last Tuesday, winning game one 8-0 in five innings and game two 4-3.  The Cavs banged out 10 hits and Dana Hartings (Sr., Chicksaw, OH/Marion Local) fanned eight in earning the win to improve to 7-1 on the year.  Laura Schmidt (So., Canton, OH/Jackson) had two RBI and went 2-2.  Ashley Hoover (Fr., Louisville, OH/Alliance) and Chelsea Saunders (So., Hinckley, OH/Highland) each went 2-3, with Hoover adding a double and two RBI.  In the second game, Walsh came from behind in the bottom of the fifth inning with a game-winning two-run homerun by Alyssa Knupp (Fr., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw). Krystal Sherry (So., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) picked up her fourth win of the season, to improve to 4-2. Schmidt was 2-3 with two RBI.

Walsh extended their win streak to seven games with a sweep of Ursuline College on Thursday.  The Cavaliers won the first game 10-2 behind the right arm of Dana Hartings.  Hartings went the distance to improve to 8-1.  She fanned five and allowed only two hits.  At the plate, she hit a three-run homer, her fourth of the year. Krystal Sherry went 3-4 with two RBI, Kelly Jackson (Sr., Akron, OH/Ellet) went 2-3 and Brittany Sostre (Fr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) had a double and two RBI.  In the second game, Sherry pitched a no-hitter, Walsh's second of the season.  Hartings pitched a perfect game against Malone on March 21.  She fanned six and walked two in the Cavs 10-0 romp.  Sostre drove in six runs with a three-run double and three-run home run.  Alyssa Knupp and Ashley Hoover each had two hits.

The Cavaliers lost a doubleheader at Mount Union College on Sunday.  Dana Hartings (8-2) lost for the only the second time this season in game one (6-0).  She surrendered only three earned runs, as Walsh committed three errors.  Ashley Hoover went three-for-three.  In the second game, Mount Union defeated Walsh 12-4. Krystal Sherry took the loss and is now 4-3 on the year.  Brittany Sostre had a three-run homerun.

Krystal Sherry is leading the Cavs with a .492 batting average and with 24 RBI.  Center fielder Alyssa Knupp is batting .431 and Dana Hartings .429 with a team-leading four homeruns and 20 RBI.  Shortstop Laura Schmidt is hitting .392 with a team-leading six doubles.  Walsh is batting .364 as a team.  Hartings is 8-2 with a 1.65 ERA.  She has completed all nine starts and has fanned 64 in 60 innings pitched.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs Even Mark (5-5) With Three Straight Wins

Walsh evened its record at 5-5 with three straight wins.  Walsh defeated Waynesburg College (9-0) in Lexington, Ohio last Thursday and blanked NCAA II University of Findlay 9-0 on Sunday at Findlay.  Yesterday, they shutout the University of Northwestern Ohio 9-0 at home.  This week, the Cavs host West Virginia State on Thursday (3 pm) and Georgetown College on Saturday (1 pm).

Number one singles Stephen Webster (Sr., Lexington, OH/HS) is 9-4 on the season and has won his last three matches.  He is 9-1 at number doubles with Gary Innes (Fr., Randburg, South Africa).  Innes is 7-6 at third singles.  Greg Kerschbaum (Sr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 7-6 at second singles and 8-2 at second doubles with Jake Allmaras (Fr., Powell, OH/Olentangy).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs Split Matches, Win AMC Opener

Walsh (2-6, 1-0 AMC) christened their new home courts with a 9-0 American Mideast Conference win over rival Malone College last Wednesday.  Walsh has six courts, located across the street from campus and behind Giant Eagle at Washington Square.  The Cavs lost their only other match of the week, 3-6, at Baldwin-Wallace College.  This week, they host Ohio Dominican University in an American Mideast Conference match at 1 pm, then play two matches on Thursday.  The Cavs play at California (PA) at 9 am and at West Liberty State at 4 pm.  On Saturday, the Cavs host Georgetown College at 1 pm.

Jenamarie Ianni (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) picked-up her first two wins at first singles and is 2-6.  Lindsey Cady (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) won her first match and is 1-7 at second singles.  Cady and Hilary Rossi (So., Warren, OH/JFK) are 5-2 at second doubles and Rossi is 3-6 at fourth and fifth singles.
